MEET THE POLISH FINALIST OF THE IYPAE’2008 AWARD

Katarzyna Golec - the winner of the Polish finals of the International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur competition.

Katarzyna Golec, manager at the Silesian Dance Theatre, has triumphed in the Polish edition of the International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur Award, demonstrating to the Polish jury that she is the best candidate to represent Poland’s young performing arts industry in the international finals in London.

‘Katarzyna Golec is a dynamic person, with a strong drive and perfect knowledge of the arts market, as well as exceptional communication skills. That is why, despite her young age, she succeeded in becoming a manager of the Silesian Dance Theatre, the organizer of the biggest modern dance festival in the Eastern Europe’, said Sandra Wilk, a journalist of ‘Rzeczpospolita’ and manager of the moderndance.pl webportal. ‘It is worth mentioning that the dance market in Poland is exceptionally difficult due to the lack of financial support from local governing bodies, and organizing any event, be it a performance, festival or a workshop, needs an enormous amount of work to gain resources and sponsors.’

The Polish IYPA winner represented Poland in the international finals in London at the turn of July and August 2008. She competed for the International Young Performing Arts Winner 2008 title with representatives of such countries as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Georgia, Colombia, Kuwait, Lebanon and Tanzania. Together they had a chance to take part in the workshops and meetings with key British partners from the performing arts industry, visit London, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham, and see the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.

In the finals Katarzyna Golec promoted the Silesian Dance Theatre and ‘Modern Dance Theatre’ educational programme, which will enable for a professional education of dancers and choreographers. She also presented her project of art classes for young learners, both on an international, such as a project of classes for orphans, and a local plane, like the ‘Rebel Youth’ programme, designed to enable problematic youth to come into contact with the traditional culture of Silesia.

Katarzyna Golec works as a manager in the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom – an institution appointed for training a new generation of dancers and choreographers, and developing an original Polish style within the framework of modern dance. Her work comprises the representing and promoting of her theatre in Poland and abroad. She is responsible for organising international events and projects, cooperating with foreign cultural institutions and developing relations for cultural exchanges and fundraising.

The International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur Award was the second of seven International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) awards organized this year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British Council in Poland.
