Meet the Polish Finalist of the IYME’2008 Award

Anna Maminska – the winner of the Polish final of the International Young Music Entrepreneur Award

Anna Maminska was the winner of the Polish stage of the International Young Music Entrepreneur Award 2008. In June 2008 she represented Poland in the UK during the world final of the competition.

The Jury of the competition - Piotr Kordaszewski from Polish Radio, Jarosław Chyła from PAP Biznes, Paulina Wronecka from the British Embassy in Warsaw and Agnieszka Wrycza from the British Council -  have chosen the winner out of dozens of candidates.

‘The level of the competition was very high, so it was really difficult to choose the best project. We have chosen Anna Maminska because she gave an excellent presentation of her activities on the Polish world music scene, which is also well recognised abroad’ - said Jaroslaw Chyla, director of the Business section of the Polish Press Agency (PAP). ‘The first edition of the Award also proved that thinking about creative sectors within the context of economy is the right direction– the participants had no problems with presenting the tangible, business results of their work’.

Anna Mamińska has been active in the music sector for 12 years. She was one of the founders of the best known Polish folk group Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa, and since 2001 she has been co-operating with Yerba Mater as a musician and manager. For 2 years, she has also been running the Agency of Musical Travels (Agencja Podrozy Muzycznych), a part of Opensources Label and Management, where she deals with organising festivals and concerts, the production of music recordings, and much more.

In the international final of the competition in the UK, the Polish winner promoted the Lao Che band and the Polish alternative world music scene. She was hoping that if she won, it would help her organise the World Beat Festival project, where she wanted to invite representatives of progressive ethnic music from all around the world.

‘I’ve decided to present the Polish music sector from the perspective of Oficyna Opensources – a concert agency and music label which I co-run. The most difficult task in the competition was presenting the Polish music scene in an interesting way, however, even preparing the presentation itself gave me many interesting ideas which may help me to put our plans into action. I am very happy that I will travel to Great Britain, where I’ll have an opportunity to learn from masters’ – said Anna Maminska about her participation in the Award.

In June 2008 Anna Maminska spent over 10 days in the UK, where, together with finalists from other countries, visited London and Manchester, and participated in meetings with representatives of the British music scene, in the international music business event London Calling and in the Glastonbury Festival. Of course, she also took part in the world final of the International Young Music Entrepreneur Award, where she contested for the money prize.

The International Young Music Entrepreneur Award was the first of seven International Young Creative Entrepreneur Awards organised in 2008 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the British Council Poland.
