TEACHING KNOWLEDGE TEST (TKT)

PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE TEST FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS

If you are a teacher of English to speakers of other languages, TKT offers you the opportunity to deepen your professional knowledge

TKT: Teaching Knowledge Test is an entry level certification for teachers of English to speakers of other languages. TKT has been developed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).

TKT is an entry level certification for the suite of Cambridge teaching awards, including CELTA and DELTA qualifications.

WHAT DOES TKT CONSIST OF?

TKT: The Teaching Knowledge Test tests candidates on their knowledge of how to teach English. It is not an English proficiency test and there is no practical component. The test covers teaching methodology, the language of teaching, use of resources, lesson planning and classroom management methods.

Currently there are three TKT modules and each one last one hour and twenty minutes and contains eighty questions. Each module can be taken independently of the others:

Module 1: Background to language learning and teaching. Including: describing language and language skills; background to language learning; background to language teaching.
Module 2: Planning lessons and the use of resources for language teaching. Including: planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons; selection and use of resources and materials.
Module 3: Managing the teaching and learning process. Including: teacher and learners’ language in the classroom; classroom management.

Below are the two optional TKT modules:

TKT: Knowledge About Language: English teachers need to be both linguistically aware and able to understand the difficulties students may encounter in the language learning process. To help meet this need, TKT: Knowledge About Language tests a candidate’s knowledge of the language systems needed by teachers for planning and teaching their lessons.
TKT: Content and Language Integrated Learning is a new optional module of the Cambridge ESOL TKT: Teaching Knowledge Test. It tests a candidate’s knowledge of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and the practice of planning, teaching and assessing curriculum subjects taught in English.

WHO IS TKT FOR?

A TKT certificate is evidence that the holder understands the fundamentals of current ELT methodology well enough to access further professional development opportunities through professional publications and journals, electronic fora, workshops and conferences, or simply though sharing ideas with colleagues.

The test will appeal to teachers from a range of different backgrounds, but especially:

Pre-service teachers or graduates who would like to supplement their qualification with an international certification in teaching English.
In-service English teachers who are motivated to develop professionally and perhaps enhance their career opportunities.
Those who are moving into English teaching from other subjects or professional backgrounds and would like to be better trained for the work.

In addition, TKT may be of interest to regulating authorities or those involved in training who seek a professional benchmarking tool to add value to their existing programmes or for the development of new ones.

WHO RECOGNISES TKT?

TKT was launched in April 2005 after extensive trials and is already gaining recognition around the world. It has been endorsed by test users within the East and South-east Asian region. The test is currently being taken by English teachers in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan.
