The following policies apply to all British Council employees. They also govern any other individuals working on British Council premises, including partners of and suppliers to the British Council. Our Code of Conduct sets the standards for the way we work in all our activities and locations.

Anti-fraud and corruption
In line with the Fraud Act 2006 and the Bribery Act 2010, the British Council has a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards fraud, bribery and corruption.
We adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to fraud, bribery and corruption, and we have an obligation to prevent our organisation and staff from being exposed to the risks of money laundering.
The British Council recognises that we have a fundamental duty of care towards all children we engage with, including a duty to protect them from abuse.
We recognise and manage the impact of our business operations and activities on the environment.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
We are committed to ensuring that there is no unjustified discrimination in the recruitment, retention, training and development of our staff.
The British Council must ensure that whenever it engages in trading activities, it does so in a way that reflects its commitment to fair competition.
Financial management and reporting
All British Council expenditure must meet public scrutiny. Our resources must not be abused, misspent, misappropriated or defrauded, and cannot be used for private interests.

We are committed to openness and transparency and we recognise our UK statutory obligations under the Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations.

In all that we do the British Council acknowledges our duty of care to ensure a safe place to work for our staff, customers and visitors
Information security and privacy
The British Council collects and uses personal information to offer individuals information, products and services.
Media and social media
We have rules in place to ensure that we maintain an appropriate and professional media and social media presence.
Our partnerships should always reflect our values and be in line with our charitable objectives.
We are committed to the creation, maintenance and management of records which document our activities to support governance and to facilitate compliance with legal requirements.
