Hussein Fancy is a scholar of medieval Spain and North Africa with a particular focus on interactions between Muslims, Christians and Jews as well as questions of law, theology and violence. He received a B.A. in English Literature from Yale University and a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University in 2008. He has conducted extensive research in both Europe and the Middle East, including three years living in Spain and two years living in Egypt.

He is currently completing two book projects, Mercenary Logic: Muslim Soldiers in the Medieval Crown of Aragon (forthcoming) and Before Tolerance: Alliances between Muslims and Christians in the Age of the Crusades (forthcoming).

He has held fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, Social Science Research Council, Fulbright-Hays Program, National Endowment for the Humanities and Spain’s Ministry of Culture. Most recently, he was a member of the Michigan Society of Fellows (2007-2010) and a Carnegie Scholar (2009-2011).
