Professor Abdeslam Maghraoui
Associate Professor of the Practice of political science, Duke University
Abdeslam Maghraoui teaches Middle East politics at Duke University’s Department of Political Science. He is an affiliated faculty with the Duke Islamic Studies Centre. His areas of research are Islam and politics, political liberalism, and democratization.
He is author of Liberalism without Democracy, a book on the failure of the liberal experiment in Egypt during the 1920’s and 1930’s. He has published several papers on the challenge of democratization in the Maghreb, notably Morocco. He has conducted policy research on governance issues for the World Bank and several US and EU government agencies.
From 2004 to 2007, he directed the Muslim World Initiative at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Abdeslam Maghraoui received a Ph.D. in politics form Princeton University.
