Environmental strategy
The British Council’s environmental policy shows our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.
We are doing this by using internationally recognised environmental management tools, which are adapted and managed to meet our unique structure.
In the UK
- We have implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) at our six offices - in London, Manchester, Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh. The EMS helps us to manage and monitor energy consumption, waste, procurement and travel
- We manage the EMS to the international standard IS0 14001
Overseas
- We have implemented an Environmental Framework Tool (EFT) across our global network. The EFT provides a structured framework of five levels from awareness to leadership. The EFT provides management guidance with an overall aim to reduce our global environmental impact
Other initiatives
- Development of our Sustainable Transformation Action Plan which will provide a framework of actions by staff across the organisation
- 'Greening the estate': a sustainability guide for premises projects
- Low Carbon for Cultural Relations - an internal carbon management project to support programme activity
- We are a member of GLA500 – the Mayor of London's initiative to work with organisations to achieve carbon savings
The British Council's Climate Change programme is working to strengthen networks and relationships among decision makers, influencers and future leaders worldwide to tackle climate change.
