Cambridge English for Young Learners, three exams

Test your child's English skills

The Cambridge Young Learner English (YLE) tests have been specifically developed to assess young learners (from seven to twelve) They help develop English and reinforce language learning through a series of carefully chosen tasks using latest teaching methods to encourage learning.

The highest level test (Flyers) is roughly equivalent in language level to KET, it can serve as a stepping stone to KET; or PET, as learners move into adolescence.

These tests are set at three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers.

Starters
Paper Type of questions
Reading and Writing (20 minutes) true/false, spelling, gap-filling and open-ended questions.
Listening (20 minutes) matching, noting down names and numbers, multiple picture-choice and colouring.
Speaking (5 minutes) picture-based tasks and answering questions about themselves.

movers
Paper Type of questions
Reading and Writing (30 minutes) matching, true/false, multiple choice, gap-filling and open-ended questions.
Listening (25 minutes) matching, note completion, multiple picture-choice, colouring and drawing/writing.
Speaking (7 minutes) identifying differences, relating a story, identifying the odd-one in a set and answering questions about themselves.

flyers
Paper Type of questions
Reading and Writing (40 minutes) matching, true/false, multiple choice, gap-filling and open-ended questions.
Listening (20 minutes) matching, note completion, multiple picture-choice, colouring and drawing/writing.
Speaking (9 minutes) identifying differences, relating a story, identifying the odd-one in a set and answering questions about themselves.

marking and issue of results

Issued within five weeks.  
They appear as grades out of five for each section. These appear as Cambridge shields on an Award that every child receives.
There is no pass/fail, as the learning system aims to reinforce English learning.
