Cultural Leadership InternationalCultural Leaders in the Netherlands share their expertise and passion through an international programme
NEWS! Our CLI project continues to support emerging leaders in the Benelux creative industries. One such high-flyer is Quinten Peelen, whose interview was recently featured in Air Malta's in-flight magazine. You can download the interview (PDF) here.
The two Netherlands CLI nominees, Quinten Peelen and Björn Stenvers, both attended the first event of the Cultural Leadership International Programme, the Leadership Development Days, which took place at El Matadero Madrid between 11 and 13 May 2009, and are now sharing their experiences with the CLI partners in the Netherlands.
Learning and sharing
Arriving from 15 different countries in Western Europe and North America for tailored leadership coaching, over 30 participants were each nominated by authoritative voices in their home nation’s cultural sector, representing theatre, dance, film, music, literature, museums, galleries and other arts occupations. Within moments of meeting these energetic people, however, many traditional ideas about these cultural categories exploded as they described the multi-faceted modern reality of their daily work, including: producing electroacoustic installations; European mobility programmes for dancers; initiatives to engage the public with architecture; gender identity festivals; designing underground museums; brokering research between artists and the corporate sector; and showcasing new playwrights from ethnic minorities.
“The variety of professionals from different backgrounds was a real treasure” say Quinten and Bjorn
Revealing a fascinating mix of ‘fusion’ projects and innovative approaches, the group also reflects the growing complexity of the world’s cultural sector, and demonstrates the importance of cultural output in supporting economic growth and social change. The challenge for Cultural Leadership International and these young leaders is to pool their entrepreneurial, creative and personal energies to inspire others.
Now in its pilot year, Cultural Leadership International works with key organisations in each participating country to identify emerging talent within the creative industries. In the Netherlands, the British Council approached MinOCW and the Van Gogh Museum as influential centres of knowledge, who each nominated a short list of individuals to join Cultural Leadership International.
“I want to make CLI a success!” Bjorn
Two nominees were invited onto the programme for leadership training, skill development, and network membership. A British Council grant will also be awarded to the one with the most promising future vision, to strengthen his leadership qualities over the next 12 months. Importantly, the programme nurtures these new leaders as powerful catalysts for growth and improvement in the cultural sector, and for a more integrated society, locally and internationally.
Nominees from the Netherlands
Nominated by MinOCW, Quinten Peelen, Director of the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, is responsible for recent innovations such as a career development programme for talented concert pianists. His remit covers Utrecht, New York and Shanghai, so Quinten has great potential to inspire the professionalisation of others in his field in the Netherlands and abroad.
“With the CLI programme, the British Council has taken a special initiative to create a powerful network of cultural entrepreneurs from many disciplines and countries. For me, it is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of: it provides an inspirational feeling of synergy and momentum. From all perspectives an enormous push forwards!"
Nominated by the Van Gogh Museum, Björn Stenvers, Head of Marketing at the Amsterdams Historisch and Museum Chairman of the Marketing Advice Group to the Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board, has a successful record of improving public engagement with cultural institutions, and a strong focus on international collaboration. Björn is also well positioned to lead positive change in these areas.
"I found out what others thought about my leadership styles, and also considered those of many others like Ghandi and Sinterklaas."
The British Council is proud of its association with MinOCW and the Van Gogh Museum, and grateful for their input to Cultural Leadership International.
