Celebrating the Seven Olympic Themes

GSP students in Nepal shared their personal stories and ideas on the seven Olympics themes - Excellence, Courage, Friendship, Respect, Determination, Inspiration and Equality with Ben Johnson, Assistant Head Teacher at the Bishop Barrington Sports College in Durham, during his Reciprocal Visit to their school. Ben spent most of his time interacting with the students, observing classes, and sharing interesting information on the Olympics.

When introducing the seven values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the students of Mount Hermon School in Kathmandu, Ben told them “if you only do what you have done, you will only get what you have got. You need to have the courage and take risks in life. Don’t be afraid to make new friends and always strive for excellence.”

“I have always been a football fan but it was interesting to know so much about other games too. I learnt a lot about the London Olympics, especially about the mascots. They look really cool,” said 14 year old Milan. His friend at the table, Rachana adds, “There was so much we didn’t know about our own country’s participation in the Olympics until today. I had a great time.” Milan and Rachana along with friends Sohpia and Nagina were the winners of the Olympic Quiz organized by Ben in the school.

Student Workshop on sustainable develoment and conflict resolution

55 school students from 18 Global School Partnerships (GSP) schools from four districts of Nepal attended a “Student Workshop” on the Global Themes of Sustainable Development and Peace & Conflict Resolution on 19th September 2011. This workshop, organised by British Council GSP programme was for students aged 13-15 years to understand the concepts of Sustainable Development in the real world, see practical examples of sustainable projects and understand the importance of conflict resolution through a Forum Theatre.

The forum theatre focused on problems faced by a student named Prem, who is bullied by his friends, teachers as well as parents. The Director –one of the our International Climate Champion, made the theatre more interactive by asking students for solutions from their side and students contributed their views through acting with real actors.

They also learnt how waste products can be used for making briquettes – the trainers were our own International Climate Champions. Some of them even got a chance to make briquettes out of saw dust and paper pulp. This technique is quite useful in Nepal as the briquettes can replace gas, kerosene in cities and firewood in villages.

A participating teacher said,

“This workshop was an eye-opener. This event has helped our students as they are already working on a sustainability project and they have learnt new ways of Saving the Environment and Recycling for sustenance. I request The British Council to implement more events like these and also if possible arrange for a camp where children can stay in a village and put to use the knowledge they have gained from these events.”

One of the students said

“I got a great opportunity to learn about different things which I can apply in my daily life and made friends as well. I came to know how we can save our environment and how we can use the things that we waste everyday everywhere”.

Christmas card design competition for schools under the Global School Partnership (GSP) programme

Would you like a design by one of your student's to be this year's official DFID Christmas card?

The Secretary of State for International Development of the UK Government would like to invite students from all GSP schools, to enter DFID's Christmas card competition this year. This is the fourth competition of its kind and the design will be made into an electronic Christmas card. Pupils can work together as a group or individually, and can use any design that will work well as a Christmas card. There needn't be a greeting on it unless they have a particular 'global' message that fits with the theme in mind. To know more about this competition please visit http://www.dfid.gov.uk/Get-Involved/For-schools/global-school-partnerships/DFID-Christmas-card-design-competition/
