Our General English Courses focus on developing the language and skills necessary for effective communication across a wide range of different contexts.

How will a General English course help me?

These courses aim to help you improve your confidence in communicating. Each course has clear Learning Aims (language areas and skills) your teacher will help you to work towards, giving you lots of opportunity to improve your existing skills and learn and develop new one.

Our General English courses are designed to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well helping you to develop a thorough understanding of grammar. We take a practical hands-on approach that involves you in using the language from the very first day.

WHAT IS OUR ACADEMIC STRUCTURE FOR ADULTS?

WHAT ARE OUR ADULT LEVELS?

We divide our students into levels from Beginner to Advanced.  Each level is taught across four terms that cover one year.  New students can be tested into the beginning middle or final term of a level. This ensures that the class you go into is the best possible level for you and that you progress through the levels more quickly.

What are Cambridge ESOL examinations ?

Cambridge ESOL offers the world's leading range of certificates for learners and teachers of English - taken by over 3 million people in 130 countries. They help people gain entrance to university or college, improve job prospects or measure progress in English. s.

The Cambridge ESOL General English certificates cover basic exams for those beginning to learn English, through to advanced certificates for those who have attained a high level of fluency.

Adult English courses at the British Council are linked to this Cambridge ESOL General English suite of exams and we provide opportunities for you to become familiar with them throughout your learning career.

What is Teacher’s Knowledge Test (TKT)?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test from Cambridge ESOL about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.

What is IELTS (international English Language Testing System)?

IELTS  assess the English ability of people who are going to study or work where English is the language of communication. Over 1 million people take IELTS every year. IELTS tests scores are trusted by more than 6000 universities and collages around the world, including 2000 institutions in the USA.

IELTS is used by many professional bodies and governments including the British, Canadian and Australian immigration services.
