“Vertical Road” Akram Khan’s latest contemporary work touring the region

Akram Khan has assembled a cast of very special performers from across Asia, Europe and the Arab World. With a specially commissioned score by long-term collaborator composer, Nitin Sawhney, Vertical Road draws inspiration from the Sufi tradition and the Persian poet and philosopher Rumi. Exploring man's earthly nature, his rituals and the consequences of human actions, Vertical Road becomes a meditation on the journey from gravity to grace.

Vertical Road will be presented at Al Madina Theatre, Beirut on 26 and 27 April at 8.30 p.m.

…and in the region in:

***Syria on 19 and 20 April, 8.00 p.m. at Dar Al Assad for Culture and Arts
Palestine on 5 May, 7.00 p.m. at Ramallah Cultural Palace

***As the UK Foreign Office is now advising against all but essential travel to Syria, we have regrettably decided to cancel the performances of Vertical Road that were due to take place in Damascus on 19 and 20 April.
The remaining legs of the tour in Lebanon (26-27 April) and the Palestinian Territories (5 May) are still scheduled to go ahead as planned.

The tour in Lebanon will include performances of Vertical Road, post show discussion between Akram Khan, the dancers and the audience, and talks inspired by the content and artistic process of the work as well as workshops in collaboration with theatre professionals and artists from the region.

The Vertical Road regional tour and associated activities are part of the British Council’s New Work New Audiences arts project which allows audiences in the region and the UK to experience the power of Arts in developing cultural understanding, trust and dialogue.
