Entertainment
Hollywood Online – all the latest on movies, gossip and Hollywood trivia.
Internet Movie Database – mind boggling amount of information on over 150,000 movies. But very well organised and easy to use.
Mr Showbiz – covers all aspects of showbiz. Good for interviews. Excellent and up-to-the-minute reviews of new movies. Plus the usual gossip columns.
The Case.com – mysteries, whodunits, puzzles and riddles. Aimed at native speakers, and probably not useful except at Upper Intermediate and above. But has a wide range of material, updated weekly.
Travel
Foreign Office – the comprehensive and well-maintained site has not only the official government line on overseas news and foreign policy, but detailed and up-to-date travel advice, especially on dangerous countries.
Lonely Planet destinations – use the maps to pick countries, regions, towns with extensive local information for travellers.
Multimap UK – use the maps to pick countries, regions, towns with extensive local information for travellers.
Travelocity – arrange a holiday on the Web, flight bookings, travel guides, accommodation.
Crime
Metropolitan Police – the 'Wanted' section can be useful. The Crime Prevention section has some good texts for work on advice.
Crime Prevention Initiative – more advice, this time at a site sponsored by an insurance company. Contains the complete text of a Home Office pamphlet.
Crime Scene Evidence File – a site dedicated to solving imaginary crimes, especially murder. A new case comes out weekly. Extensive texts, video clips, photos of evidence etc. Users can email for additional information, solve current or past crimes etc.
The Krays – a biased version of the life of the Kray Twins, the East End gangsters. Homesite of the 'Kray Kampaign'.
Murder Inc – a history of early twentieth century gangsterism in general, and the real-life 'Murder Inc' in particular.
Focus on the Death Penalty – a balanced, well-presented site from the University of Anchorage, Alaska, with comprehensive links to both sides of the debate.
Society
The Site – aimed at British teenagers and young adults, The Site addresses drugs, health, sex, education, money, or, as the page puts it, 'Cash. Moola. Dosh. Bucks. Spondoolicks. Wedge. Readies. Lolly'. Usually very well designed, but with heavy use of graphics.
New Musical Express – news, reviews, gigs, charts. Often offensively garish, but bang up-to-date.
10 Downing Street – well-designed and updated daily, this site has changed a good deal under the Labour government. The 'Open Discussions' can be... surprising.
Yahoo's 'Culture and Groups' page – you can link from here to information on groups from 'Anarchists' through 'Geeks' and 'People of Color' to 'Vegetarians'.
Environment
No shortage of information on the web here, although much of it might be thought too advocational for classroom use. Greenpeace International is well put together, as is the Friends of the Earth site.
The Global Eco-village Network is a large, organized site, often with interesting features. The NASA Observatory has some stunning shots of the Earth from space, but can be frustratingly slow to load.
Envirolink – the Website of the 'Online Environmental Community' is a very rich resource, with large sections on animal rights, sustainable business etc.
