English for business

Click here for English – attractive site with an extensive set of activities in grammar vocabulary and reading with a Business English focus. Also contains a few games and a discussion and e-mail list.

Linguarama Business English – based on the online magazine Postscript, this is a well-organised site with an impressive collection of business English materials which are organised by themes but can also be selected in grammar, reading or vocabulary categories. A must for Business English students.

Work Skills – BBC site giving general advice, tips and warnings to help you apply for a job. Topics include writing letters, e-mail, filling in application forms, telephoning, being interviewed, giving presentations and non-verbal communication.

Business Letter Writing Basics – a simple template for generating formal business letters. An easy site to use. It doesn't go in to any great depth, but would benefit those at an intermediate level of business English.

Know who you want to hire – an interactive hiring tool which helps you develop an accurate job description, leads you through a series of work-related and personal character traits, generates a customised worksheet for evaluating various candidates and provides sample interview questions.

Report Writing – links to seven sites on report writing skills, including NASA's guide to technical report writing.

Company Annual Reports – these extensive documents are available online thanks to this useful site, which has a separate Asia section.

Open for Business – a series of fact sheets and discussion activities to take you through the stages required to develop a new product and bring it to market. Also, a six-part story with language activities about a woman setting up her own business in Africa.

Creating an Effective Business Plan – an interactive workshop which leads you through the steps to creating a successful business plan.

Ten Days in Manchester – interactive business English course following the adventures of two people attending a conference in Manchester, England - with audio, video and quizzes. It is another excellent site from the BBC. It may take a little while to download, but is well worth it.

Words in the News – registration required (free). Daily news, plus closing prices of 3,000 equities traded on the London market and leading international markets. Includes links to stock exchange sites. You can also search a global archive with four million news articles from 3,000 publications.

BESIG – home page of the IATEFL Special Interest Group for Business English. Their links page has around fifty links, though not all of these are strictly Business English.

HM Treasury – a well-maintained site with good texts on (eg) the Euro, transcripts of speeches, and general information on the UK economy.
