Many schools in England offer AS levels, A levels and Vocational A levels. Students usually take AS - Advanced Supplementary levels at age 17. About 5 subjects are taken and results are graded from A to E. Following problems, AS level is currently under review by the DfES, Department for Education and Skills.
A levels
Usually taken at age 18, 3 subjects are selected. The results are graded from A-E. Since the introduction of AS levels, A levels are sometimes referred to as A2s. They offer great flexibility. Students decide how many A levels they wish to study, depending on their career choices, ability, provision at their school or college and the advice given to them by their teachers and the Careers Service. A levels require individual study and emphasise on traditional study skills and presentation.
Vocational A levels
Known as AVCEs - Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education, Vocational A levels are comparable to A levels but are in practical, work-related subject areas. They emphasise knowledge, skills and understanding in broad vocational areas and focus on investigative work and assignment writing. Any combination of A levels and Vocational A levels may be taken.
