Investing in the Lebanese Creative Economy seminar

25th and 26th of November 2010

The aim of the seminar was to highlight the economic benefits of investing in the creative industries, the various components of the creative ecosystem, the importance of clustering, the potential role that Lebanon can play on the regional and international levels, as well as the required infrastructure for this to happen.

The seminar was followed by a half day workshop involving 40 key players from the public sector, academia, business and creative sectors, intermediary and international agencies as well as the private sector and financiers. The aim was to bring the different views and insights together and work on paving the way for next steps.

Overview

Panel 1: Access to Finance - To address the need for bridging the gap between creative entrepreneurs and investors through developing a suitable financial infrastructure for the creative sector.

Moderated by Elie Habib, Country Manager of the Riyada Enterprise Development division of Abraaj Capital (Lebanon), the panel hosted Martin Smith, Policy adviser and spokesman, CEO's office at Ingenious Media (UK), Tarek Sadi, Managing Partner at Middle East Venture Partners (Lebanon) and Antoine Abou Samra, Managing Director at Bader (Lebanon)

Panel 2: Virtual and Physical Spaces - To explore the spatial characteristics of the creative economy and discuss successful cluster and urban regeneration strategies that could be implemented in Lebanon.

Moderated by George Akiki, Senior Director, Corporate Affairs CSR Strategic Operations at Cisco (Global), the panel included Shelagh Wright, Associate at DEMOS (UK), Georges Zouain, Principal at the cultural consultancy Gaia-Heritage (Lebanon), Mazen Skaf, Managing Director at the Strategic Decisions Group (Europe and Middle East), and Tania Saba Mazraani, Director at Berytech Technology & Health (Lebanon)

Panel 3: Institutions - To explore the need for developing an appropriate institutional framework that supports the creative and cultural sectors at a policy, research and skills’ provision level.

Moderated by Desiree El-Chebeir, Director of Operations of the Lebanon Creative Cluster, the panel included John Newbigin, free lance journalist and a strategic consultant for the cultural industries (UK), Salam Yamout, National ICT Strategy Coordinator at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers(Lebanon), Gaby Deek, President of the Professional Computer Association of Lebanon followed by a discussion with actors from the Lebanese creative ecosystem on the successes of the creative industry structure in Lebanon, pain points and possible solutions.
