Creative Industries

The British Council Lebanon in association with the Lebanese Association for the Development of Private Funding for Culture and with the support and involvement of the Lebanese Ministries of Culture and Economy is launching an ambitious project for developing and supporting the creative industries in Lebanon.
Creative Futures seminar aims to strengthen and open up business links with the UK and more specifically Wales following visits and seminars that we organised in 2004.

Creative Industries and Creative Economies

Since 2001, the British Council Creative Industries Unit has been pioneering a programme of work called Developing Creative Economies (DCE) to highlight the potential social and economic value of supporting the creative industries. The programme aims to share the UK understanding and experience of the Creative Industries sector, with specific emphasis on mapping, which exposes the economic impact of the sector (for example, barriers to growth, infrastructure, business support, support for the artist, the role of the creative industries in regeneration and the impact of social inclusion programmes which harness individual creativity). To date, our DCE work has led to successful partnerships between the UK and Latin America, the Baltic states, South East Europe, South Africa and the Philippines. Whilst the British Council may have initiated the process, it rapidly moves to become simply a partner with a focus on how we can support networking, capacity building, leadership and creative education: all essential elements in the development of a sustainable creative economy.

The DCE programme also recognises issues around cultural diversity, globalisation, intellectual property rights and the development of a strong, indigenous independent sector. Our other work, such as the International Young Creative Entrepreneur awards, which directly supports this initiative by promoting Leadership and Networking, Capacity Building and creative education for creative entrepreneurs.
