Dialogue objectives
Internationalisation is rising up the agenda for the higher education sector in Japan. Over the last few years, funding has become available for internationalising research and setting up international offices overseas. On 12 and 13 February 2009, the Japan-UK Higher Education Symposium was held in London to take forward the collaboration between UK and Japanese higher education sectors. British Council Japan organised the event in partnership with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the leading grant giving agency for universities in Japan, to commemorate 150 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
More than 90 delegates from eighteen UK and sixteen Japanese universities, as well as representatives from national agencies and ministries of HE in both countries, took part, giving testimony to the strong interest in deepening cooperation between the two countries.
The symposium provided a forum for policy makers and practitioners to discuss common areas of interest in the development of HE partnerships. The three themes selected for this event were:
the contribution of HE to regional development
