We support education reform initiatives in Jordan designed to enhance access to, and improve quality of education at school and university levels.
We work on developing and facilitating partnerships between educational institutions in Jordan and the UK.
Near East North Africa (NENA) Regional Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Education Project
The ICT in Education project was launched in 2005 with the aim of achieving four main outcomes in five NENA countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria):
The project concluded its three year life cycle with a number of major achievements across the region:
Following a regional ICT in Education conference in early 2007, the project was extended for another year to focus on one priority area, educational leadership, which required further development, being relatively a new concept in the five participating countries. A training programme was developed based on the UK SLICT programme and 35 head teachers in each country were selected to attend the training. It aimed to build the capacity of education leaders in leading and implementing the vision for ICT and learning in the school.
The last year of the project witnessed a range of major outcomes across the five countries, all building on the success achieved in the previous years. Jordan, for example, took on the responsibility to further expand the base of trained education leaders. The cascade training model was replicated to disseminate the training to more than 500 education leaders across Jordan. Lebanon and Egypt succeeded in their outreach programme to train more than 300 each to help embed ICT in teaching.
Jordan Badia Project
The British Council is supporting a field trip by a team of UK specialists, teachers, and headteachers to the Badia area of Jordan from 23 – 01 November 2008. The delegation will be met and accompanied by a group of Jordanian Ministry of Education teachers throughout their stay.
The main objective of the project is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Badia by:
One tangible outcome would be the development of teaching units delivered in Jordanian schools to raise the awareness in Jordan of the Badia region.
The longterm outcome is to create a starting point for present and future sharing of experience between the UK team and their Jordanian counterparts as well as achieving international links and exchanges between the UK and Jordanian schools.

Get Connected UK Jordan Information Technology (IT) Initiative
The project aims at enhancing the creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship of IT professionals and students to increase their opportunities to compete in the global market. This British government funded project, which was launched in late 2001, has been working on building networks between the Jordanian IT sector and their counterparts in the UK, enabling knowledge transfer and rewarding outstanding students.
Enhancing social work education in Jordanian universities
This initiative aims to bring together representatives from two UK universities, Jordanian universities, educational institutions, government organisations (GOs) and non-government organisations (NGOs) to discuss the status of social work in Jordan and identify areas in which the universities from Jordan and the UK will cooperate.
Jordanian and UK universities signed a cooperative agreement on 31 May 2006 in London where the Jordan River Foundation in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al- Abdullah launched the Jordan River Foundation (JRF) UK chapter.
The Social Work Conference will be on 7 and 8 October 2008 “Exploring the Reality, Expanding the Vision” marks the end of the Social Work Initiative and will draw together social work professionals, policy makers, educators and researchers in order to reflect on current social work practice in Jordan and discuss the opportunities for development. The conference will also mark the launch of the Jordanian Association of Social Work that aims to encompass the three key aspects of social work in the Kingdom: the professionalization of Social Work, development of social policy and social work education. The conference will facilitate open dialogue across national, regional and international boundaries and recommendations of the conference will be a benchmark in the history of professionalizing social work in Jordan.
