English Together Summer School 2012

In June 2012, the British Council Israel will be running their English Together Summer School for the third time, building on the success of our summer schools held in Fureidis in 2009 and 2011 which brought together Jewish and Arab youth in an English-speaking environment, fostering friendship and trust. Watch a short video about the English Together Summer School 2011.

The English Together programme aims to address the lack of communication between neighbouring Jewish and Arab communities to encourage tolerance and understanding using English language study as a mutual goal.

This year’s school will be run jointly with the AMAL school network and will serve as a model to be replicated in other communities around Israel. The programme will link a school in Beer Sheva and Tel Sheva for a year-long project beginning with a week–long summer school and followed by “Talking Cultures”, a British Council cross-community online project which will continue throughout the school year.

IATEFL 2012

The British Council Israel ELT Department was very proud and excited to send two British Council delegates and the winner of the TeachingEnglish Blogathon 2012 to the 46th Annual International IATEFL Conference and Exhibition - one of the largest global teachers’ conferences - that took place in Glasgow in the UK from 19-23 March 2012.

As well as exhibiting our various services and products at the conference, our delegation was very involved in the conference events. British Council Senior Teacher Trainer, Leo Selivan presented a workshop on ‘Revising and Recycling Lexis’ and British Council delegate Aviva Shapiro presented a workshop on ‘Teaching English through Literature’.

TeachingEnglish Blogathon 2012 winner, Nahla Schowahne was one of four Roving Reporters nominated to give accounts of the sessions they attended as well as their personal experience at the conference. Nahla’s posts can be read on Glasgow Online, the official conference website.

“The conference was an opportunity to develop professionally, be exposed to the latest in teaching methodologies and in particular, learning technologies. A highlight of the conference was the launch of the British Council’s brand new LearningEnglish Teens website.” (Jane Cohen, Teaching English Consultant, British Council Israel)

Connecting Classrooms Moscow Youth Forum

An Israeli delegation composed of three teachers and their students and Ministry of Education English Inspector, Dr. Shoshana Plavin, were sent by the British Council Israel to take part in a two day Connecting Classrooms seminar in Moscow from 18-20 March 2012. The seminar brought together teachers and students from around the world to discuss the issues of ‘Diversity, Inclusion and Volunteering’.

The seminar provided the participants with a unique opportunity to interact with their peers from Italy, Bulgaria, Russia and the UK, form new friendships and develop a viable plan of action to continue the program in the future.

“The Moscow Youth Forum has been an unforgettable experience and I would like to thank you for initiating and organizing such a unique platform for young teenagers and teachers to exchange ideas thus making the Connecting Classrooms project  a powerful tool to make a real change.” (Ricky Carmel, teacher, Brenner High School Petach Tikva, Israel)

Dickens 2012

7th February 2012 marked the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth. To celebrate this milestone, the British Council Israel is running a series of workshops, events and offering a range of free educational resources throughout 2012.

For the campaign’s signature event, which took place in February 2012, the British Council Israel brought to Israel English language author Jeremy Harmer and world-renowned violinist Steve Bingham to present two musical, theatrical performances based on Dickens’s most prolific works. The performances were well received by hundreds of Ministry of Education representatives, English teachers and students from all over the country. “Thank you so much for treating us with such a spirit lifting event! Jeremy Harmer's performance together with Steve’s playing and the wonderful atmosphere added tremendously to our great enjoyment of Charles Dickens's literature.” (English Department Head, Ohalo college in Kazrin). Read more about our exciting Dickens' performances with Jeremy Harmer.

The Spring ETAI conference on 28 March 2012, honoured Dickens with an ‘Oliver Twist’-themed breakfast sponsored by the British Council Israel as well as a ‘What the Dickens?!’ workshop which was presented by Senior Teacher Trainer at the British Council, Leo Selivan.

The British Council Israel is offering school visits to educate students about the author's life and works and two exciting new workshops for teachers. For more information on all our Dickens 2012 activities and events.
