The British Day at the Haifa International Film Festival
17th October 2011
This year we are partnering with the 27th Haifa International Film Festival (13-22 October 2011) to celebrate the launch of the new UK-Israel Film Co-Production Treaty and bring the best British films and film makers to Israel.
We have organized a series of events as part of the British Day on Monday 17th October to initiate dialogue around the Treaty and discuss its possibilities. These include closer co-operation and financial benefits between the two countries’ film industries.
The events included screenings, master classes and professional meetings.

Professional events
A delegation of British film makers met their Israeli counterparts and participating in professional discussions
The British guests: John Madden (Oscar winning director, “Shakespeare in Love”), Gareth Unwin (producer, “The King’s Speech”), Isabel Davis (British Film Institute), David Thompson (Origin Pictures), Michael Kuhn (“The Duchess” Kwerty Films), Joe Oppenheimer (BBC Films), Pete Czernin (“In Bruges” Blueprint Pictures), John Persey (Met Films), Kris Thykier (“The Debt”), Robert Buckler (Renegade Films) and directors Elizabeth Mitchell (“Island”) and Jes Benstock (“The British Guide to Showing Off”)
The UK delegation participated in a professional meeting with Israeli producers and Directors in the framework of the 8th Our Story pitching conference, to discuss how to make the most of the film treaty and initiate collaborations between the countries.
The UK Treaty with Israel is the 7th that the UK has signed and has been received enthusiastically by both countries’ film industries and film-going public, which have long-standing, warm relations.
The British Council Director in Israel, Simon Kay, said: “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to breathe life into the Film Treaty and to promote the best possible relations between the two countries. I am delighted that a number of British film-makers will meet their Israeli counterparts in Haifa to explore opportunities for creative and artistically challenging co-productions.”
To celebrate the British day we hold a premier screening of John Madden’s Film “The Debt” and a reception hosted by the British Council, the British Embassy in Israel and the Haifa International Film Festival. The British Ambassador to Israel, Matthew Gould, interviewed the British director John Madden about his new film, a remake of the Israeli film “The Debt” and about the new Treaty. (invited guests only)
British Shorts and Shorter - Young and Restless
We have teamed up with the Haifa International Film Festival for the second year to bring you the best of British Short Films. In this programme we bring film professionals from the UK to share their expertise and network with their local counterparts.
Two programmes of short films, exposing courageous and thought provoking work of the best young British film makers working nowadays.
This excellent selection of films tells the stories of young people in Britain, from large urban surroundings or from small towns, searching for identity and intimacy. They feel love, lust, shame and confusion, and are portrayed with a touching delicacy and beauty.
The programme includes:
• A programme of award winning films by writer/director Daniel Mulloy including his new film “Baby” (Sundance 2011) with the films’ star Arta Dobroshi. They are holding a master class on film making.
• Liz Harkman artistic director of “Encounters” Short Film Festival in Bristol, is presenting a selection of award winning Shorts and is holding the master class The Long Life of Short Films.
• Can you do it in 90 seconds? A selection of British very short films, winners of the Depict! shorts competition, is screened before feature films at the festival.
