Our vision, purpose and values

The future for the UK in this crowded, dangerous, beautiful world depends on people of all cultures living and working together on foundations of education, mutual understanding, respect and trust.

What we do

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations. British Council Scotland is based in the Tun, near the Scottish Parliament. We work with organisations in Scotland, the UK and internationally to connect Scotland and the world through the arts, education, science and governance. We do this by:

Offering international opportunities to educators and young people in schools, colleges and youth groups.
Working with our education partners to promote Scottish education overseas and providing support to British Council-managed scholars
Making the world smaller and bringing people together through online educational collaboration
Encouraging a just and inclusive society by promoting good governance and human rights
Providing Scottish-based artists and organisations an international context to work in and promoting the vibrancy and quality of the Scottish arts scene internationally
Strengthening international scientific links for Scotland and stimulating debate about the impact of science on people’s lives and the environment.

The British Council’s offices in 110 countries and territories around the world provide Scotland with an international gateway and strengthen Scotland’s reputation around the globe.
