Time Bank
One of the British Council large-scale programmes that supports a growing network of future young activists and social entrepreneurs aged between 16 - 30 to develop them into Changemakers, bringing them to meetings by high-profile organizations such as the World Economic Forum and the United Nations to ensure that youth voice is heard and their leadership skills are developed and shaped by the experience. Global Changemakers aims to create a powerful global network for action to provide opportunities, share experiences & help youth make practical and visible differences in their communities.
As a result of the economic crises, time became one of the most valuable resources; therefore, GCM youth in Qatar has agreed to establish a Time Bank where they can reach diverse groups of young people, work with a wide range of institutions and organizations and support youth activism in their communities. The virtual Time Bank will boost time value and give it a financial sense as youth can make time deposits through seizing opportunities to voluntarily work in various companies provided by British Council, at the same time the bank can channel these time deposits into investments.
GCM Time Bank Clients: Bank Clients play different roles in activating the bank services, and can at any point change roles:

Funders: are institutions that in collaboration with British Council provide youth with opportunities to volunteer and exercise their skills & knowledge. Hence, supply youth with number of voluntarily hours to deposit into their GCM Time Bank accounts. Yet benefiting from this significant human resource.

Investors: youth with initiatives who would like to invest with their deposited time in their GCM Time Bank accounts, to get in return other youth time and help with their initiatives, according to the amount of their deposited time.

Donors: Youth who obtain skills or knowledge in specific sectors and want to be a genuine force for positive social change by disseminating their skills to their peers and other youth. Consequently collect hours to deposit in their GCM Time Bank accounts with a choice of becoming investors or volunteers.

Volunteers: active youth with different interests who are motivated to exploit their time contributing to their community in exchange of the valuable experience and recognition certificates.
- To create a mechanism for youth to join together in common cause and provide training, guidance and support to empower youth to undertake effective actions whilst building their capacity in different sectors and changing perceptions
- To build a network of dynamic youth who are eager to utilize their time effectively.
- To strengthen the ability of youth to draw on the skills and resources of their peers contributing to their projects’ success
- To build a network of funders who can employ youth energies and provide them with experience and recognition
- To provide youth with future career opportunities in different sectors as well as prospects to build their CVs empowering them to make more effective decisions concerning their lives;
- To influence partner institutions Corporate Social Responsibility in mobilizing and activating youth role helping them act as facilitators for authentic youth voice;
- To enhance awareness of importance of social and voluntary work, develop time ethics, and raise youth responsibility in utilizing it effectively
The Time Bank offers you a range of possibilities to how you may use the time deposits in your bank account:

Withdraw your time in a formal certificate:The participant has the choice to withdraw a joint certificate from the British Council and the organization he volunteered with. This may be helpful to many students who require a certain number of hours to graduate, or for youth who are looking for an experience certificate to help them find employment and build upon their curriculum vitae.

Invest your time: The participant may choose to invest their hours in a project of their own. For example, a volunteer who had 50 hours in his Time Bank may choose to invest his hours in a photo exhibition to show the world his talent in photography. This volunteer has now become an investor and is able to use the 50 hours in exchange for other people’s time to help him with his project.

Transfer of hours: Similar to a commercial bank, the participant is able to transfer his unused hours to other volunteers in order to help them with their projects and activities.
