Crossing Borders is an online creative writing scheme successfully piloted in Uganda in 2002. The aim is to work with a new generation of African writers in developing creative writing skills.

Graham Mort, poet and distance learning specialist, led the pilot project in Kampala in 2002. Other UK based tutors were the novelists Sarah Maitland, Liz Jensen and Catherine Johnson. Ugandan writers who participated were Patrick Mengeni, Ernest Sembebua and Kitty Kituyi.  

In 2003, the scheme will expand to take in more young writers from other African countries. Participants will be able to join one of four virtual creative writing classes in prose, poetry, scriptwriting and writing for young people. Graham Mort, Ross Stanley and Valerie Bloom will lead classes, and participating countries will include Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
