Jordanian Tawjihi Equivalency

Jordanian Tawjihi Equivalency Standards for G.C.E, I.G.C.S.E and G.C.S.E Effective from 2003/ 2004

To achieve equivalency to the Jordanian Tawjihi (Jordanian school leaving certificate) you must comply with the following:

General conditions for equivalency:

1. Student must have completed twelve academic years of schooling.
2. Student must have passed at least two subjects at the Advanced Level (A-Level) in addition to six subjects at the Ordinary Level (O-Level). Passing grades should be A-E in the A-levels and A-D in the O-Levels.
3. The same subject at two levels is considered two separate subjects in the equivalency. For example, if a student takes biology in the advanced level as well as the ordinary level, the two subjects are considered separately.
4. In addition to A-levels and subjects at Ordinary level, students graduating from Jordanian schools must undertake and pass (during the eleventh and twelfth grades) at a school level the following subjects: Arabic language (communication skills), Islamic Education (for Muslim students) and General Education in the Jordanian curriculum for students graduating in the year 2007/2008 onwards.
5. Students graduating from foreign schools outside Jordan must pass tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades and provide certificates that are validated as appropriate, in addition to A-level and O-level certificates validated by the British Council in Amman.
6. Information Technology subjects are considered science subjects at both levels.
7. Graduation year is the year during which a student fully meets the requirements of the equivalency.
8. Arabic should be one of the eight subjects that an Arab student applies for in an Arab country. The subject should be one of the following:

Equivalency in the Scientific Stream

To gain Tawjihi equivalency in the scientific stream, the following is required:

• Six passes in O-level/IGCSE/GCSE exams that include:

two passes in scientific subjects

one pass in Arabic  (please see the table on the first page)

• Two passes at A-level

one full A-level in mathematics or in physics

the other A-level may be a full A-Level in a science subject or two AS’s in two science subjects.

Equivalency in the Literary Stream

To gain Tawjihi equivalency with the literary stream, the following is required:

• Six passes in O-level/IGCSE/GCSE exams that include:

one pass in Mathematics

one pass in Computer Studies or Information Technology.

• Two passes in A-level

one full A-level must be in Arabic (please see the table in the first page)

the other A-level may be a full A level in any literary subject or

two AS’s in any two literary subjects or

one AS in a literary subject and one AS in a scientific subject.

Repeating the equivalency

Students are allowed to repeat the equivalency in order to improve their average one year after the last equivalency has been established. That is by repeating one or two subjects from the previous equivalency.

Calculating the final percentage

The final percentage of a score is calculated as follows:

A* = 98    C = 75

A = 95    D = 65

B = 85    E = 55

The sum of all percentages is then divided by the total number of subjects.
