What types of course do you offer?

We currently run courses throughout the Academic Year as well as Intensive (shorter) courses during holiday periods.

ACADEMIC YEAR COURSES INCLUDE:

•General English

We offer General English courses from Elementary (A1) to Proficiency (C2) level.

All our courses aim to help you develop the four skills in English: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

A minimum of 120 hours is required to move from one level to the next.

•Business/Corporate English

We offer Business/Corporate English courses from Intermediate (B1) to Proficiency (C2) level. The courses are designed to familiarise you with the vocabulary and cultural background you will need to feel comfortable in an English-speaking business environment.

Please note that these courses cover similar material to the Business English Certificate (BEC) exam, but are not exam preparation courses.

However, we will shortly be offering BEC courses at our other centres.  Please contact: coursanglais@britishcouncil.fr for further information and/or to register your interest.

If you wish to enrol for a Business English Certificate (BEC) exam, please contact Exams Services.

•Conversational English

We offer Conversation Classes for students at the following levels: Intermediate (B1), Upper Intermediate (B2), Advanced (C1) and Proficiency (C2).

Topics for discussion will be chosen in consultation with the whole class at the beginning of the course.

Courses are designed to maintain and enhance your knowledge of English (vocabulary, collocations, idiomatic expressions and grammatical structures), whilst at the same time building up your confidence in using the language.

•IELTS

We offer a 20-hour preparation course each semester, starting in December or January, to students at Intermediate (B1) to Upper-Intermediate (B2) level and above.  The aim of the course is to prepare for the academic module of the IELTS exam by developing your language skills and exam technique. You will also be given the opportunity to use Cambridge Practice Papers and authentic test papers.

More information on this course can be found by following this link.

If you wish to enrol for the IELTS exam, please contact Exams Services.

•Exam Preparation

In addition to IELTS test preparation courses, we offer the following Cambridge exam preparation courses: the First Certificate Examination (FCE) at level B2, the Cambridge Advanced Examination (CAE) at level C1 and the Cambridge Proficiency Examination at level C2. These courses are aimed at consolidating and developing your skills in all aspects of the English language.  They will also help you prepare effectively for the exam using Cambridge practice papers and past exam papers. You do not have to take an exam at the end of an exam preparation course if you do not feel ready to do so.

These courses will prepare you for the June exam session.  However, you may register for an exam session later in the year if you do not feel ready to take the exam at that time.

If you wish to register for a Cambridge exam, please contact Exams Services.

INTENSIVE COURSES

Intensive courses include:

•IELTS Exam Preparation

This is a 20-hour exam preparation course run during October, February, April and July.

•English for “Prépa”

This is a 30-hour course for students entering “Prépa” classes to help them prepare for the examination.  Particular emphasis will be placed on translation, listening and speaking.

NEW BUSINESS/CORPORATE COURSES

BEC

BEC is an international examination designed by the University of Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), to assess proficiency in business English. The certificate is recognised by educational institutions and corporations worldwide.

BEC is practical by nature, so you will learn to use English in authentic business situations, e.g. meetings, presentations, negotiations, etc.  All four skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – are tested in the exam.

EXAM LEVELS

BEC Preliminary (B1)

This exam prepares candidates to interact effectively while carrying out routine business transactions, e.g. speaking to clients over the telephone, writing brief letters, making appointments.

BEC Vantage (B2)

This exam assesses how candidates can conduct and take part in meetings using negotiation skills to put across and understand a point of view. Candidates are expected to be able to draft letters, memos, reports, minutes of meetings and make presentations using the appropriate business vocabulary and format.

BEC Higher (C1)

This exam assesses proficiency in the use of English for making presentations, negotiating effectively in the promotion of products and services, and understanding texts relating to Finance, Advertising and Marketing, Human Resources and Health & Safety.  Candidates are expected to be able to engage in extended conversations with clients at meetings and seminars.

•ILEC

The University of Cambridge International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) is an internationally-recognised ESOL examination. The exam is a high-level, legal-oriented language qualification for lawyers and law students set at levels B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The exam is based on realistic tasks of the kind that legal practitioners would be expected to encounter in their daily working lives. Successful candidates are able to use the language in practical situations, to participate in meetings, negotiations, and discussions of a legal nature, express opinions clearly, and are able to understand and produce texts such as legal correspondence, emails and memoranda.

There will be two levels:

Introduction to Legal English
