The Kolkata office of the British Council, hub of our activities in East India, is a landmark in the heart of the city’s buzzing commercial district. Fondly dubbed “BCL” – for British Council Library – we are now more than just a library. We offer a wide range of services, from educational counselling to cultural events, and host a steady stream of library visitors and examinations aspirants. We have a Teaching Centre which delivers high quality English language classes direct to customers. We work in the areas of education, examinations services on behalf of UK boards and projects in the arts, English language, climate change, and intercultural dialogue.
A new feisty look with an in-house cafe complemented by our cheerful staff make the British Council a must-visit place in this culture-conscious city. At any given time, over 200 people can be found on our premises, browsing books, trawling for information on obtaining UK qualifications, surfing to discover the diverse offerings of UK’s creativity in fashion, design, literature, theatre, arts and cutting edge science.
We welcome visitors of all ages: the thriving Young Learner’s Zone – YLZ for short – is a smash hit with its visitors. The school breaks find our library teeming with children, lost in far-away worlds.
E-Zone, short for our special collection on the English language, is another big draw for learners and teachers of English. The world-class DVD collection featuring some of the best moments from British cinema and television is complemented by our music collection. One can even sample the music CDs on our ‘listening posts’.
Our activities reach out to all over East and Northeast India - Guwahati, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi and Patna. Partner organisations, such as the Association of British Scholars, in these cities help us carry forward our work of enabling individuals and organisations to forge links with the UK, sharing the experience and expertise to shape a better future for both India and Britain.
