Global XChange Team 70
From March to September 2008, nine young Indonesian volunteers join nine others from the UK to work in local communities in Stansted, UK and Padang, Indonesia. This team of 18 young people (all aged 18-25) will offer 6000 hours of voluntary works for six-month programme. By being paired up cross-culturally, and being placed in host homes, the volunteers will experience a new insight of British culture on a daily basis.
Through this programme, we provide learning and development opportunities for young people. Lidya Karlin (22), a volunteer, said ‘I can do little things which are valuable for others’.
The learning goes beyond as the volunteers will get involved actively in several community projects. In Bishop’s Stortford and Harlow, each cross-cultural pair will give a hand on tackling various local issues ranging from disability to woman empowerment. Local organizations are indeed a central point in fostering the volunteer learning process in this program.
“I applied for this program because it can help improve my English, now I realize I have gained and will obtain so much more than just a better English” said Hendriets Mayos (23) a volunteer from Ambon, Indonesia. Hendriest will work alongside his UK counterpart, Hannah Jenkins (24), at Bishop’s Stortdford’s YMCA. Together they will help the organization in designing publicity which includes researching and writing press articles. “Before we start the program, I thought communication between two different cultures will be difficult. It turned out to be a lot easier”, Hannah said.
Aside from being placed in Host Homes and being assigned in local organisations, the volunteers will also get the chance to improve their understanding on global issues through Global Citizenship Days and Community Action Day. On the later, the team is expected to engage wider part of the society. As their first attempt to involve more community member, Team 70 has succesfuly participated in Harlow’s Multicultural Arts Day held at Harlow Civic Center on April 4th 2008. Team 70 decided to exhibit Indonesian art and crafts as well as to help other ethnic organisations’ exhibits.
Global Xchange Team 70 will fly to Padang, Indonesia by Mid-June 2008. In Padang they will be involved in tackling various local issues. Among them are disaster preparedness management, disability, and compulsory education.
