NICK BESLEY (Teacher)

Nick Besley

I hold a certificate and am completing my diploma in English language teaching. I have been teaching English to young learners and adults for six years and have worked in Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, the Czech Republic and England.

My top learning tip:
If you like English songs, find out the words to the songs you like! Music is a great way to learn new vocabulary!

MARIE-CLAIRE CHABOT (Coordinator for adult courses)

MC Chabot

I have been teaching English to adults for 11 years in Shanghai, Singapore, Paris and Milan. I hold the Cambridge University Certificate and Diploma in teaching English to adults and I am also a qualified teacher trainer for Cambridge.

My top learning tip:
Check out the BBC’s Learning English webpage, especially ‘Words in the News’, where you can find news reports and a useful vocabulary section to read and listen to. This is really useful for keeping up to date with current affairs in English!

MARTIN CHAN (Teacher)

Martin Chan

I hold a Trinity Diploma gained from Sheffield Hallam University and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PCEd in English Language Teaching) from Hong Kong University giving me qualified teacher status. I have taught young learners for the last six years as well as a range of English courses for adults.

My top learning tip:
Make friends with English speaking people whenever you can and speak English as often as you can, without worrying about accuracy. Develop your confidence and fluency first then deal with your accuracy later.

Charlotte Cooke (Coordinator for kindergarten courses)

Charlotte Cooke

I have a degree in Early Childhood Studies and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Early Years Education. I have taught very young children in the UK, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

My top learning tip:
Put magnetic letters or words around the kitchen and foam letters in the bathroom so your child can practise recognising letters and words.

INGRID DANIELS (Senior Teacher)

Ingrid Daniels

I have the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA), and Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and I am a tutor on the Young Learners extension to CELTA.

Hong Kong public libraries have a great selection of books in English which can be enjoyed by both children and parents.

JONATHAN GRIFFITHS (Teacher of adult courses)

Jonathan Griffiths

I have the Trinity College London Diploma in teaching English to adults and have been teaching for more than 10 years in the USA, Spain, Thailand and Hong Kong. I was Director of Studies for 5 years but I am currently enjoying being back in classroom as a full-time teacher here at the British Council in Hong Kong.

My top learning tip:
Try to read as much English as you can outside the classroom but make sure you read things that you enjoy. Novels, newspaper articles, magazines and the internet are all great ways to build up your vocabulary and confidence in reading.

ALYS HANKINSON (Teacher)

Alys Hankinson

I hold the Cambridge University Certificate and Diploma in teaching English to adults and have been teaching English for 16 years in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. I have been involved in teacher training and educational management for the last 7 years and have given presentations at many country conferences.

My top learning tip:
Knowing the right words and how to pronounce them is absolutely key in getting your message across and we need to practise using a word a lot before it comes out naturally and confidently. Don’t worry - I will help you in class by making sure new words come up again and again.

Jackie McMullan

Children love to sing and chant. Songs and rhymes are a fun way for them to easily pick up sentence structures and vocabulary.

FRAZER MELVILLE (Teacher)

My top learning tip:
If you are watching a film, put the English subtitles on. Even if the audio is not in English, this is a great way of being exposed to language: the more you see, the better your English will be!
