Theme 6: Sound of the Community
Sound is a key component in allowing learners to connect to their community. This theme will explore the importance of sounds in daily functions and community life.
- In an increasingly modern world, a multitude of sounds bombard the public on a daily basis. Focus could be placed on an analysis of the sounds we hear in our community.
- Through the classification of the sounds they encounter within their community, learners will be able to connect physical objects to the sounds that they make. This process could enable learners to realise the value of natural objects and the sounds they produce.
- Students should be given the opportunity to collect samples of the varied spoken dialects evident within their community. It could also be interesting to record colloquialisms that are used by people within their local community and compare and contrast these with those used in other areas of the UK and China.
- Music could also be examined within this theme, with a study of music produced within a certain community being compared and contrasted with productions in other parts of the UK/China.
Within this theme, the second phase of the project should be a celebration of the sound in their community.
- Although this would naturally lend itself towards music, industrial sounds and spoken word should also play an important role in raising the awareness of the sound of a community.
- A video or sound 'room' that the public can enter could be an interesting way to display their work. Students could ask members of the public to become 'immersed in the sounds of their community'. This would allow the general public to realise exactly how their community sounds and how this affects them.
