Experience the diversity of UK Literature
To celebrate creative writing in English and emphasise writing with an Asian connection, the British Council is partnering with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival 2011 to organise events with two UK authors, including award-winning biographer, Hilary Spurling and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah (listed as one of Britain's top 50 post-war writers by The Times newspaper).

In Conversation with Hilary Spurling
Hilary Spurling is the author of The Unknown Matisse and Matisse the Master which won the Whitbread Book of the Year and the Los Angeles Times biography prize in 2005. Her biography of Ivy Compton-Burnett won the Heinemann and Duff Cooper prizes and Burying the Bones was longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2010. As well as writing acclaimed biographies of Paul Scott, La Grande Thérèse and Sonia Orwell, she has been both theatre critic and literary editor for the Spectator and a lead book reviewer for the Observer and Telegraph. She founded the Royal Literary Fund’s Fellowship Scheme for writers and lives in London.

A Festival of Poetry - Sessions 1 & 2
Benjamin Zephaniah is a British Jamaican Rastafarian writer and dub poet. He won the 2002 Portsmouth Book Award for Refugee Boy (2001), a novel for teenagers. His other successful novels for teenagers were Face (1999) and Teacher’s Dead (2007). His numerous poetry collections for children include Talking Turkeys (1994), Funky Chickens (1996), School’s Out (1997) and Wicked World (2000). Zephaniah was included in The Times list of Britain's top 50 post-war writers in 2008 and has also released several albums of original music. He received Best Original Song in the Hancocks 2008 and Talkawhile Awards for Folk In this session, he and other poets will recite some of their best works as well as sharing their experiences of writing.

Benjamin Zephaniah will meet primary and secondary students at the Festival’s School Progamme from 14th to 16th March. Please click here for detail.
The British Council will also support Benjamin Zephaniah’s school tour workshops in particular secondary schools. Invitation and registration forms have been sent to schools. Please email arts@britishcouncil.org.hk for enquires.
