We are happy to present the Iranian film and theatre director Vahid, who will run the six-day HamletZar Workshop based on the principles and work of the group Goossun Art-illery. Aimed at professional and amateur actors, dancers and performers, it is being organised by Kinitiras Studio-Artistic Residency Centre in collaboration with Full House Promotion.
The aim of the workshop is to facilitate an encounter between two cultural and performative forms: Elizabethan Theatre and Middle Eastern Zar, while reflecting on the issues of immigration and human rights. Using techniques and methods derived from different theatre performers and practitioners, HamletZar will introduce participants to its multicultural and imaginative world.
Vahid, the artistic director of HamletZar, is an Iranian film and theatre director who decided to move to Europe in 2001 when foreced to put an end to the activities of Goossun Art-illery, the experimental theatre group he founded in 1997. His encounter with Europe as a refugee brought with it a new identity; an identity, which both forced and inspired Vahid to work towards more politically conscience aesthetics.
Goossun Art-illery, based both in London and Copenhagen, consists of an international team of actors and has worked in partnership with the Barbican, Tricycle Theatre, Goldsmiths, the University of London, the Pinter Centre for Performance Research, Visiting Arts and Dance Base (in Edinburgh).
HamletZar, however, is not a performance about Hamlet only, but rather a project about immigration in Europe. Throughout the play Hamlet struggles to reclaim what is rightfully his. He struggles to regain his dignity and his human rights; a struggle that leads him to the kingdom of Denmark in search of a better life.
The workshop will be held in English.
