Sport Unites People

South Caucasus is a very culturally diverse region, making efforts to come terms with many political and ethnic differences and create a stable living environment for the future.

Youth and sport theme has proven potential for engaging young people in intercultural dialogue and activity regardless of background and ability.

“Sport Unites People” South Caucasus regional project builds on the extensive youth work done in a number of countries across the SEE region and, particularly, on the relationships and networks developed as a result of the British Council Youth! Sport! Action! global pilot for the 2012 Olympics.

This project will extend the impact to all of the South Caucasus and will explore key themes in intercultural dialogue and education promoting tolerance and mutual understanding among youngsters representing different cultures.

The youth summer camp “Sport Unites People” will gather 21 participants aged between 18 and 25 from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in Ureki, through July 31 – August 8, 2008.

A series of sport events and workshops on a variety of topics (teamwork and partnership, leadership, communication and intercultural learning) will be organised in order to empower and train future youth leaders in using sport activities as a tool for local youth work and education for young people.

Main outcome of the project will be new projects that will be planned by participants to contribute to more youth active participation as leaders in local and international initiatives.

The project will be implemented totally by partner organizations from Georgia- Academy for Peace and Development, Armenia- Armenian United Nations Association and Azerbaijan- Educational Center for Youth with the financial support of the British Council.

The main objective of our work in Development Services is to support our partners who are working to improve access to justice and public services, to increase awareness of rights and to increase people's participation in decisions affecting their lives. We bring the best of UK and international expertise to our partners and their organisations at government, district or community level.

We build partnerships with the UK and build human capacity for development through our management of scholarships and training. We link individuals with opportunities in UK and around the world to enhance individual capabilities, support organisational development and contribute to mutual understanding.

We deliver economic development projects and programmes to support the international poverty reduction agenda and encourage equitable economic growth. Projects and programmes benefit from our technical expertise in economic development and our experience of managing a wide variety of initiatives in this area. We tailor our expertise and management services to meet specific needs.
