How to apply for first year funding?

The closing date for receipt of applications was 9 June 2009

Please read the following information carefully.

The British and French teams must fill in and submit separate applications Please make sure that the names of the British and French project leaders are the same on both applications.
The UK project leader should send the completed British Council application form by email to alliance@britishcouncil.fr
The French project leader must make a matching application on a French proposal form which is available from, and should be returned to, EGIDE. Unilateral applications will not be accepted and British applicants are advised to check that their French partner makes a matching application to EGIDE.
You will be sent an acknowledgment receipt by e-mail within one week of your application form being received by the British Council in Paris. If you do not receive an acknowledgment within 7 days, please contact us to check that your forms have arrived safely.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in December 2009

How to apply for second year funding?

For projects which were successful in the previous call for proposals( first year funding in 2008), Both teams must submit a request by 30 October 2009

For UK teams , renewal forms will be available from this website.
For French teams, renewal forms will be available at the end of the summer 2009 from www.ambascience.co.uk

The programme

The Alliance programme, established in 1989, is jointly managed by the British Council and the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères in France (MAE). It is funded on the French side by the MAE, the Ministry of Research, and the national research bodies and on the British side by the British Council. Its aim is to promote the development of Franco-British scientific co-operation between universities and public sector research institutes by providing support for new scientific collaborations between two (or more) research teams working on a common project. Grants are made for one year, renewable for a second year.

pure, applied, social sciences ?

There are no priorities defined in pure or applied sciences.

All areas will be considered in social sciences. However, projects involving direct collaboration between researchers in the social sciences and the pure sciences will be particularly welcomed.

What is the selection process ?

Priority will be given to projects led by young researchers setting up new collaborations between laboratories, showing most promise for impact and innovation of research and potential for subsequent funding (e.g. EU or industry), and providing training and travel opportunities for young researcher.

British applications will be assessed by expert referees from the UK and French applications by French referees. The final selection will be made by a Joint Committee consisting of British and French experts, appointed by the British Council, the French Ministère des Affaires Etrangères, and the French Ministère de la Recherche. The Joint Committee will meet in autumn 2003 to select projects for 2004. Applicants will be informed of the results by December 2003.

International activities of the Royal Society

The programme provides a contribution towards international travel and subsistence costs only, for exchange visits that are an essential part of the collaborative project. There is no element in the grants to cover bench fees, running costs, equipment, consumables or other expenses. It follows, therefore, that each partner must already have made provision for these and other costs associated with the project. Successful applicants will be required to produce a report and statement of expenditure by the end of 2004.

The project grant for the British team will cover the cost of international travel and subsistence for visits to France by British team members. One visit is counted for each person on each occasion he/she travels. It is important to state clearly the duration of each visit in the appropriate section of the application form. The Joint Selection Committee may award grants for fewer visits than requested in order to support more projects within the total funds available for Alliance. The French partner will apply to EGIDE (details below) for a corresponding grant for the French team.

An average British grant is £1700 per year, the maximum award is usually £3000 per year. Travel costs are calculated on APEX fare rates and subsistence allowances are based on £65/day, £360/week, £1350/month, up to 3 months maximum.

Project timetable
Each project will normally last two years - support for the second year being subject to progress in the first. In very exceptional cases, a third year's support may be provided. Those projects which have already received support for three years are not eligible for any further award. Applicants seeking a second or third year's support should contact the British Council for the appropriate renewal application form

Applications must be made concurrently by the British and French teams that wish to collaborate. The British project leader should apply on a British application form available from the British Council in Paris, and returned both by e-mail and by post, to :

Unilateral applications will not be accepted and British applicants should therefore ensure that their French partner makes a matching application to the EGIDE. More than one group from each country may participate. In this case, the lead group should be indicated clearly on the application form. You should make sure that the same British and French project leaders are stated on both application forms.

It is essential that two copies of the application form are submitted.

The closing date for 2004 applications was 10 May 2003.

You will be sent an acknowledgment receipt within two weeks of your application form being received at the British Council in Paris. If you do not receive an acknowledgment, please telephone to check that your forms have arrived safely.
