Education UK Emerging markets campaign: India

28 April to 10 May 2012

In May 2010 we piloted the Education UK India: Emerging Markets Campaign which was designed to be an innovative and lower cost option to explore second and third cities. The cities selected for the events had shown good potential for a student recruitment event of this type and over the last two to three years the Education UK team in India has been working in these markets organising exhibitions focusing on agents and delivering presentations to generate interest and prepare them for an Education UK recruitment event.

The successful pilot was followed up with a second Emerging Markets Campaign last year.  The success of this means that we are pleased to announce that we will be repeating the event in April-May 2012. The dates and cities for the event have been confirmed as follows:

  • A travel agency will be recommended to book accommodation, internal travel & airport transfers as a package for all delegates travelling with the event. If delegates wish to make their own travel arrangements and reservations, they are welcome to do so.

Format

  • This will be a table and chair event, where each institution can display an institution branded table cloth and a maximum of two pop-up banners.
  • Institutions are advised to showcase their respective prospectus keeping in mind that the event will attract 350 to 700 visitors a day.
  • Volunteers will be optional and will be arranged by us only if the institution requests one in advance. The institution will be expected to pay Rs. 500/- directly to the volunteer.
  • A maximum of two people will represent each institution which includes the delegate and agent (if any). It is mandatory to have at least have one institutional representative at each venue

Stand sharing will be made available at a premium of twenty per cent on the stand costs.

Please note that the participation fee does not include international or domestic travel, accommodation, subsistence or freight, except where stated.

Special note

At the India Advisory Panel, a decision was taken to limit the total number of representatives on an exhibition stand to four in a combination of any or all of the following:

  • Institution staff
  • Volunteers (stand assistant)
  • Agents representing the institution
  • Alumni

Volunteers will be optional and this information and a form requesting names of the stand representatives will be included on the booking forms for the event.

It is strongly advised that institutions send representatives from the UK to staff their stands rather than using local agents only since students expect to meet UK representatives and not agents whom they can meet anytime.

Aims and objectives
The overall aims and objectives of this event are:

  • To create awareness and promote UK education amongst students in second and third tier cities of India.
  • Provide an opportunity for UK institutions to showcase their courses, modes of study and facilities for international students

VAT
From 1 January 2010 HMRC implemented changes to the way VAT is to be collected and charged, specifically in relation to VAT treatment of cross-border services.  VAT is now payable on the added-value UK customer management element of all Education UK Exhibitions taking place outside of the EU. In order that VAT be apportioned it will now be necessary to separate the UK management element out accordingly.

The exhibition invoice will display two lines:

  1. The first line will detail the overseas costs of the exhibition (venue hire, equipment hire, local promotion, local staff costs etc.) and will not be VAT-able.
  2. The second line will detail the UK costs of the exhibition (recruitment, administration, UK promotion etc.) and will be VAT-able.

This cost for UK management has always been in place, the only difference being that prior to these changes it was included as part of the holistic pricing model for each exhibition.

Please see the HM Revenue and Customs website for further details.
