IELTS, The International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of people who need to work or study where English is used as the language of communication.

What is IELTS?   
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides an assessment of English language proficiency. It is widely recognised for further and higher education and is preferred by most universities and other educational institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America.
IELTS assesses whether the candidate is ready to study in English or work in an English speaking environment.   
Academic or General module   

You can choose between 2 modules:

AC - Academic for people applying for tertiary, undergraduate, postgraduate and professional registration;
GT - General for immigration purposes, for those going to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education or to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level.

How to register for IELTS?   

Please download the IELTS Candidate letter (doc) which thoroughly describes the process of registration and what happens on the exam day.

The registration is ongoing but the number of places for each examination session is fixed. You can register online for the IELTS test. Register now and follow the instructions to register as a new candidate. Look for help about the online registration here.

When you finish you will receive an e-mail confirming your British Council exam registration details. You should then pay the test fee 1950.- EEK by direct bank transfer within 3 working days, otherwise your registration will be cancelled. To complete the registration please send us a recent document photo which will later be printed on your certificate.

On the test date   

On the day of the examination please come to the British Council at Vana-Posti 7 by 09.30 a.m.

Please bring with you:

  • Passport or national ID card (the same identification document that was used when you applied for IELTS. Drivers' licences are not accepted)

If you fail to bring these you are not allowed to take the test.

The exam starts at 10.00 a.m. with the Listening part and latecomers are not allowed into the examination room.The first part of the examination includes listening, reading, writing and ends approximately by 01.20 p.m.There are no breaks during the written examination; food, drinks and personal belongings (handbags, mobiles atc) are not allowed into the examination room.

The Speaking part is usually taken after the Written part of the examination.

Results   

The results will be issued by means of the Test Report Form (TRF) within two weeks of the examination (on the dates below) and sent to candidates. (Please note that at the moment the results cannot be viewed through the online exams registration system.) You will receive only one TRF. Up to five additional copies of the TRF can be issued for the receiving institutions listed in TRF Addresses Information sheet within one month of the test date. Candidates should provide the address of the institution, department and name of the addressee.

If additional copies are required after one month has passed, you need to fill in an Additional TRF's application form and will be charged 50 EEK per copy. You can send the Additional TRF's application form with the payment slip to British Council office by post and we will send TRF's to receiving institutions.

Transfers and refunds   

Candidates who seek to cancel their registration or transfer test dates within the five-week period prior to the test date will only receive a refund if they can satisfy to the Administrator that their ability to sit the test has been affected by illness or serious causes. Serious causes include:

  • Serious illness – e.g. hospital admission or serious injury (does not include minor illness such as a mild cold)
  • Loss or bereavement: death of a close family member
  • Hardship/ trauma: victim of crime, victim of traffic accident
  • Military service

Candidates will not get a refund unless they are able to provide appropriate evidence to support their request.

How can i prepare for the test?   
  • Candidates can borrow  “The IELTS Specimen Pack” from the exam centre. This includes a full practice test with answer key so you can gain experience in the format of the test and get an idea of your level. These materials can be borrowed after bringing payment receipt to British Council office. Please note that candidates are not allowed to write in these books and have to return the books and CD-s to the receptionist on the day of the examination.
