The British Council continues to supports the Government of Egypt with its education reform programmes and introduces the UK school professionals and vocational qualifications, Higher Education and Scientific Research as international benchmarks in Egypt and the development of Egyptian quality assurance systems for education and training. Al Azhar - British Council partnership

The British Council in Egypt has been supporting the creation of quality assurance structures within public higher education Institutions for the past few years. In partnership with Al Azhar unviersity we will plan to improve the quality assurance measures and processes within their education and research programmes and help develop initiatives and structures through the resource of comparable UK experience.

As a result, last September the British Council supported a visit by two eminent consultants from the University of Sheffield to conduct a workshop, in co-operation with the AL Azhar Faculty of Medicine, Girls College. The workshop was designed and conducted in line with the Egyptian Government’s Reform Agenda to create mutually beneficial partnerships between Egypt and those UK institutions with particular interest in Al-Azhar University. The two-day workshop covered the principles of curriculum development and the principles and practice of assessment. The most significant outcome of the workshop was a substantive needs analysis for the College. The results of the analysis demonstrated a desire to move toward a more student centred, problem based, integrated, community orientated and systematic course which will, for example, encourage students to select the elements of their course.

The British Council in Egypt will be delighted to continue to support the Sheffield/Al Azhar initiative through the provision of local and international consultancies.

Quality Assurance in Education Project in Alexandria

To support the Governor of Alexandria in his initiative to improve the quality of basic education in Alexandria influencing the overall improvement of basic education in Egypt as a whole.

The British Council has provided a series of consultancies to the Governor via a UK specialist (Peter Newton) to evaluate aspects of the Education Reform Programme in the state.
