The Selector

The Selector is an award-winning international showcase for the best new music the UK has to offer - a weekly programme that covers all styles of music, from indie, dubstep, folk, soul, electro and everything in between. The show features interviews, mixes and exclusive live sessions from some of the most exciting British artists. Hosted by DJ and presenter Goldierocks, The Selector presents an overview of all that is exciting and fresh in British music.

The Selector is broadcast in Egypt on Nile FM every Friday from 3.00 to 4.00 p.m.

Join DJ and presenter Goldierocks and Nile FM’s DJ Feedo for some live Selector fun at the British Council Agouza on 10 February at 8.30 p.m.

Tickets are available the British Council offices, Agouza and Heliopolis for free.

DJ Magazine has twice voted Addictive TV number one VJs in the world saying ‘they’ve become famed for their eye-popping live shows, shredding and cutting film with beats into a heady, mind-meltingly funky mixture’. Mahmoud Refat, sound artist, musician and founder of the 100 Copies music label and the 100Live Electronic Music Festival performed with them in Tunisia and immediately knew Egypt would love them. They will be appearing as part of the Electric Cairo 2011 event at the Shahrazad Nightclub, Downtown on 16 December.

Fourth Panorama of European Film

The British Council supported the showing of five UK films at this year’s Panorama of European Film, organised by Misr International Films. The event took place from 23 – 29 November. The films were all very different but connected by the challenges their characters face in dealing with life, love, work and being a human being (or not).

Bioart and Textiles

British artist Anna Dumitriu delivered a workshop for young Egyptian artists to gain an understanding of her practice and methods in bringing together art and science and how creativity can lead to innovation. Participants learned to stain fabrics with bacteria and moulds and embroider with antibiotic thread (natural and synthetic) to create various effects and developed a bacteriocentric understanding of the world using ‘garage science’ techniques.

The workshop was curated by artist Yara Mekawei and took place at the Karmat Ibn Hanie gallery in the Ahmed Shawki Museum from 12 – 19 November.
