FAQs

Who we are and what we do

The British Council is the United Kingdom's agency for international cultural and educational relations.

With the support of our specialist colleagues in the UK, we work with professionals and decision-makers, to build relationships and create opportunities through our programmes in Science, Arts, Education and English language teaching and our information services.

We connect people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK  and other countries.

The British Council was founded in 1934. Over 7,000 people work for the British Council all over the world. We operate from 216 towns and cities in 110 countries worldwide with headquarters in London and Manchester, and offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Every year the British Council engages with over 50 million people in the UK and across the world who are looking for creative ideas and the skills, experience and partnerships to help them achieve their objectives. We welcome millions of visitors to our libraries and information centres worldwide, and we collaborate on many arts events globally.

THE BRITISH COUNCIL IN CUBA

The British Council in Cuba has the main purpose of winning recognition for the United Kingdom's, ideas and achievements, and to promote lasting, mutually beneficial relationships between Cuba and the United Kingdom. Established in Cuba in 1998, the British Council focuses on two strategic themes:

We work in the sectors of Education (including support for ELT in Cuba), Arts, Science and Information. The British Council office in Havana is since 2002 a fully accredited Centre for the IELTS exam.

In Education, we work closely with Cuban ministries to provide support to teachers of English in Cuba, through seminars, scholarships, and special projects such as the Teachers' Knowledge Test (TKT project).

In Arts, the British Council works with Cuban partners in a varied programme of arts activities, spanning music, film, dance, theatre, literature, and visual arts. There is a special focus on building links through the arts developing collaborations to exchange ideas, ways of doing things and capacity bulding.

WHO PROVIDES OUR FUNDS?

The British Council operates independently of the British government, from which we receive a grant-in-aid. The British Council earns additional income globally from teaching English, providing examinations, and managing development services. In the UK, the British Council operates as a non-departmental executive body and we are registered as a charity in England.
