FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 2

Can I take an accounting/law/marketing exam at the British Council?

Theoretically, you can take any exam you might need, provided you get into contact with the UK institution (for example: CIM, CIMA, ACCA, Open University, London University, etc). The British Council charges an administrative fee and you will probably be asked to cover the cost of exam papers dispatch to the UK. Unfortunately, we cannot provide necessary arrangements for any practical exam (e.g. chemistry, biology, etc).
If you want more information on this, please contact us.

What happens if I disagree with my result?

You may apply for a recheck or a remark of the test.
If you feel there is a problem, please first seek your teacher’s feedback. Then contact your British Council exam centre and we will explain the procedures to follow.

How are exams marked and who marks them?

A team of highly trained examiners are employed to mark the tests.
The written part of the test is marked by examiners in Cambridge and the Speaking test is marked by local Cambridge ESOL examiners. All examiners undergo a rigorous selection process and thorough training. They are also coordinated regularly to make sure they all mark to standard. All marks are double checked to eliminate the possibility of mistake. A certain percentage of exams are marked for the third time by Examiner Team Leader in Cambridge.

How strictly is IELTS marked?

Candidates should take care when writing answers on the Listening and Reading answer sheets as incorrect spelling grammar are penalised. Both UK and US varieties of spelling are accepted.
If a candidates is asked to write an answer using a certain number of words and/or numbers, they will be penalised if they exceed or do not meet this requirement. For example if a question specifies an answer using no more than three words and the correct answer is “black leather coat”, the answer “coat of black leather” is incorrect.
In questions where candidates are expected to complete a gap, candidates should only transfer the necessary missing word(s) on to the answer sheets. For example, if a candidate has to complete “in the …………” and the correct answer is “morning” the answer “in the morning” would be incorrect.
Candidates should read and follow the instructions and questions very carefully. In Listening especially, care should be taken when transferring answers on to the answer sheet.

What can I do if I think my exam was not marked correctly?
Candidates can apply for a remark of their exam and there is a fee for this. Please contact the Examinations Administrator for further details. It may take around 6 weeks for the remark to be complete.
What happens if I am late for the exam?

If you arrive late for any of the papers, report to the Supervisor or Invigilator. You may not be allowed to take the examination; if you are admitted, not all of your work may be accepted or you might have to complete the test in the remaining time.

You will not be admitted to the Listening Test for any of the exams.

What if I am ill on the day of the exam?
It is possible to request a refund ONLY in cases of illness or death (either of the candidate or someone in his closest family). Applications for refund must be accompanied by a valid medical certificate (POVIJEST BOLESTI) in Latin or English written legibly or preferably typed and must be submitted to the British Council within a week of the day of the examination.
Can someone under the age of 18 sit for IELTS exam?
The IELTS test is not recommended for people under the age of 18.
What is the pass rate for Croatia Cambridge ESOL candidates?
Can I take any other exams apart form English language exams?
Yes. British Council administers all kinds of exams for various universities and higher/further education institutions which offer external or “distance learning” programmes. Students study by themselves using materials provided by their education institution and sit for their examinations at the British Council in Zagreb. Studying this way costs less and allows you the flexibility you would not have studying the traditional way. For more information please refer to our web page or e-mail us at exams@britishcouncil.hr.
Will I be able to register my certificate in the employment record book (“radna knjižica”)?

As far as we know, you will not. Only the educational programmes verified by the Ministry of Education and Science can be registered in the employment record book.
