Registering: dates, prices, locations and results

REGISTERING FOR THE IELTS

Can I make a provisional booking for the test?

Unfortunately not. Numerous last minute cancellations and ‘no-shows’ in the past have meant that we have had to change to a ‘first come first served basis’. As soon as we receive a copy of your application form, together with payment and a copy of your ID/passport, we will then confirm your test date. You should indicate your preferred test date on your application form.

I AM APPLYING TO TAKE THE IELTS TEST. WHEN DO I GET CONFIRMATION OF MY APPLICATION?

British Council candidates will receive confirmation when they register for the test. Without payment, we cannot confirm your registration. Candidates will receive in the confirmation the details of the place and time of the written test and individual appointment for the speaking and details of the venue, as well as an individual login and password for the IELTS Portal Test preparation site.

I applied to sit the General version, but have subsequently found out that I need to write the Academic version. How do I change this?

Candidates are urged to contact the Authority that instructed them to take this test, and clarify which version they will need to take, BEFORE they submit their application forms to the British Council.

However, in the event of a mistake such as this arising, candidates have to contact the Examinations Officer at our office where they will be taking the test, at least seven days before the test date – both telephonically and in writing – and request that their versions be changed.

Versions will not be changed on the day of the test, or subsequently thereafter.

IF I LIVE OUTSIDE BOGOTA HOW CAN I REGISTER?

You have two possibilities; the first is to send someone that lives in Bogota to register for you. This person must bring two recent photos, a photocopy of your document of identification, (cedula or passport), the completed form, ( that can be downloaded here) and the payment, whether it be by debit or credit card (Visa/MasterCard) or by cheque.

The second possibility is to find out if there are any remaining places to take the exam on the date that you would like. You then have to pay into our account (we will give you the details) the full amount for the exam, as well as send us all the papers by fax to confirm that you have the place. We also need you to send us the papers by post.

DO I HAVE TO REGISTER IN PERSON?

No. If it is difficult to register in person you can send a third party to do it for you, but you must send with them a photocopy of your document of identification, two recent photos, the completed form and the payment.

CAN I REGISTER MYSELF BY TELEPHONE OR INTERNET?

No, it is necessary that someone comes to our office to carry out the registration in person.

IF I HAVE NEITHER A DEBIT/CREDIT CARD NOR A CHEQUEBOOK CAN I STILL REGISTER?

If you cannot make payment in the preferred manner then we will always accept cash, assuming you have the exact amount.

Can i take the ielts test with the british council BOGOTA if i live in ecuador or panama OR IN ANOTHER CITY IN COLOMBIA?

Yes, we offer IELTS sessions in Quito and Panama on specific dates throughout the year. For further information on registration, price and dates please write to exams@britishcouncil.org.co.

For information on where the IELTS is available in other cities in Colombia please check here for up-to-date dates and prices and contact information.

What happens if I wish to cancel or postpone the exam?

The fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Refunds are only given to candidates who can provide written proof from the relevant authorities that they are no longer required to take the exam. In this case we charge an administration fee ($50,000) for any cancellations made; therefore the entire fee will not be refunded to candidates.

I WANT TO TAKE IELTS BUT HAVE A DISABILITY OR A MEDICAL PROBLEM. CAN YOU HELP?

We allow candidates to take the test regardless of disability or medical conditions, the IELTS is designed to be fair to all those who take it. We have provisions for special needs candidates , also see below for further information.

What is required for special needs candidates? Any documentation? Do they have any special conditions to take the test?

There are different levels of ‘special needs’:

  • Special needs involving administrative arrangements only. Usually no additional document is necessary and the mention of special arrangements required in the application form is enough. Examples:
    • if the candidate is left handed, an appropriate desk can be provided
    • pregnant women can also be interviewed first, to avoid a long time in the waiting room, etc.

Please check with the our Exam Services Department: exams@britishcouncil.org.co.

  • Special needs involving the allowance of extra time or the production of modified material, will need to be supported by medical evidence (an original document on headed paper, bearing the name, relevant qualification(s) and signature of a recognised practitioner).Examples:
    • dyslexia (additional time may be allowed)
    • severe hearing disabilities (special equipment may be allowed)
    • visual difficulties (enlarged paper may be provided)
    • blind candidates (a Braille version of the test is available)
