Children's Exams

The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests are designed to offer a comprehensive approach to testing the English of primary learners between the ages of seven and 12. As such they will provide an appropriate first step towards the Cambridge Main Suite of examinations (e.g. KET and PET) which are designed for young people and adults.

STARTERS

Learning English should be fun and stimulating for children and it is also expected that it would be interesting for parents to watch their child grow in confidence as he or she learns more and more English. Taking a test such as YLE Starters is an excellent way of motivating children to learn and showing how much progress he or she has made.

This level is designed for children from the age of seven who have already taken around 100 hours of English classes.

YLE Starters has three parts: Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking and the whole exams lasts about 45 minutes.

The main skill focuses of this test are:

Reading and Writing Reading short sentences and recognising words, reading sentences about a picture, writing one-word answers, spelling single words, reading a test, writing missing words (nouns), reading questions about a picture story.
Listening Listening for words and prepositions, listening for numbers and spelling, listening for specific information of various kinds, listening for words, colours and prepositions
Speaking Understanding and following spoken instructions, understanding and answering spoken questions, understanding and responding to personal questions.

MOVERS

Continuing with the development of English language skills on children, YLE Movers is an excellent way to keep on motivating children in the process of learning a foreign language.

The Young Learners Tests are aligned with the Common European Framework, at levels A1 and A2. At this level, children would have reached a Breakthrough level.

A typical Movers candidate is likely to be aged between eight and eleven and has already taken 175 hours of English classes.

The main skill focuses of this test are:

Reading and Writing Reading short definitions and matching to words, writing words; reading sentences about a picture, writing one word answer; reading a dialogue, choosing the correct responses; reading for specific information and gist, copying words; reading a story, completing sentences; reading and understanding a factual text.
Listening Listening for names and descriptions; listening for names, spellings and other information; listening for specific information (past tense); listening for specific information of various kinds; listening for words, colours and specific information.
Speaking Describing two pictures by using short responses; understanding the beginning of a story and then continuing it based on a series of pictures; suggesting a picture which is different and explaining why; understanding and responding to personal questions.

FLYERS

The YLE Flyers test is roughly equivalent to the Cambridge Key English Test (KET) in terms of difficulty, but the lexis and contexts covered are suitable for a younger range.

A typical Flyers candidate is likely to be aged between nine and 12 years and has already taken 250 hours of English classes.

There are two possible routes from the Cambridge Young Learners English Tests to Cambridge Main Suite examinations. Candidates may take all three levels of the Young Learners English Tests before moving on either KET or to PET, or they may take Movers and then move straight on to KET.

The main skill focuses of YLE Flyers are:

Reading and Writing Reading definitions and matching to words, copying words; reading sentences about a picture; writing one-word answers; reading and completing a continuous dialogue, writing letters; reading for specific information and gist; reading a story, completing sentences; reading and understanding a factual text; reading and understanding a short text, providing words.
