Curriculum Development Training Programme

The School Leadership Program ensures that school leaders have the professional capacity required to lead an institution in an international environment, to embed global dimensions in the curriculum and ethos of the schools, and to benchmark their experience against high standards around the world.

Since 2003, British Council China has worked with provincial, municipal and city education authorities on the School Leadership Programme. Under this project, we carry out high-profile workshops, forums and both China-based training and UK-based training on improving school leadership skills to school heads, offering opportunities to visit UK schools, and to shadow UK head teachers during the UK-based training.

By September 2009, over 1000 Chinese headteachers had attended China-based headteacher training and over 330 Chinese heads had been to the UK for training. In the future, this project will continue exploring a wider range of collaboration in the area of school leadership, providing diverse activities for school leaders’ professional development and creating a communication platform for the school leaders from the UK and China.

  • “The School Leadership programme is a useful complement to the regular headteacher training programme of the Beijing Institute of Education and an important part of the whole headteacher training system. The programme provides us with vivid evidence to study and refer to the design and model of overseas training courses.” (Li Fang, President of Beijing Institute of Education)
  • ‘“Every child matters’ is the most familiar sentence we’ve heard when we had training in the UK. In the schools of UK, we could strongly feel that awareness of caring for the quality and value of every student’s life is embedded in both education concept and real action of the school staff from headteachers to teachers.(Zhong Yi Jun, ex-headteacher of Zhuhai No. 1 Middle School)
