Dandelion: The Making of the UK Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010

An exhibition exploring the making of the world’s first hairy building

Following on from the UK’s participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010, we will hold an exhibition to capitalise on the popularity, interest and awareness in China of UK creativity, as symbolised by the UK pavilion. It will use the story of the making of the Seed Cathedral to heighten awareness amongst Chinese influencers and the general public of the UK’s strengths in design, architecture and construction, and to further position the UK as a vibrant innovative and creative nation and as a nation to do business with.

The story of the making of the pavilion is told through two parallel and complementary elements - a publication, a freestanding exhibition and a film. The Dandelion exhibition will tour to at least 2 cities around China.

About UK Pavilion and The Dandelion exhibition

For its pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the UK dared to be different with a bold statement about British design, construction, invention and engineering.

The Dandelion, as it was nicknamed, captured the imagination of millions of Expo visitors and people across the globe. With its outstanding creativity, splendor as well as courage, the UK pavilion won the Winner of Expo’s Gold Award and the Lubetkin Prize, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architecture to the most outstanding work of international architecture.

As a part of the UK's Expo Legacy programme, this exhibition is curated and project managed by the British Council in collaboration with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and sponsored by Virgin Atlantic. It tells the story of the making of this unique pavilion, from the initial idea, through development and experimentation, to the construction and short life of the building. It illustrates the conviction, dedication and risk-taking required to create something truly innovative.

The contents of the exhibition are various and creative. It will unveil the mystery of this “seed cathedral” and discover the secrets of the “seeds” hidden behind. The making and installation of those acrylic rods and the wonder of the three walkways of “green city”, “open city” and “living city” will also be revealed.

This is an exhibition with remarkable significance. An accompanied publication DANDELION: THE MAKING OF THE UK PAVILION AT SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010 will also have its debut followed. Therefore, to take this opportunity, the Cultural and Education Section of British Consulate General sincerely invite the government officials, business leaders as well as the general public to be engaged in and jointly witness this story of UK innovation and creative energy.
