Best of British Animation Awards Vol.8

Held every two years, the British Animation Awards (BAA) covers all aspects of the UK animation scene, from student work to commercials, children's entertainment, short and experimental art films, music videos, new technologies. The next BAA will be held in 2012.

Best of British Animation Awards Vol.8 (2010)
This is a selection of the best of British Animation Awards nominees and award-winners in the categories for short and student films, animated commercials, TV graphics, new technologies, sound and music, many of which have also won numerous international festival prizes. Including trailers and extras, it is a unique overview of recent British animation, featuring a range of different techniques and diversity of styles.

1. Tom Fun Orchestra: Bottom of the River

Singing rubbish bags lament their fate as dead cats drift by. Bottom of the River was nominated as Best Animation in a Video for the 2009 UK Music Video Awards along with videos by Coldplay, The Prodigy, Birdy Nam Nam, and Hauschka. The UK music video awards took place on 13 October 2009 at the Odeon west end in Leicester square. Is it a song about drowned men? "Stones in our pockets and chains 'round our ankles"? "Pale blue skin and bulging white eyes"?

2. Animal Kingdom: Chalk Stars

Official video for Animal Kingdom single ‘Chalk Stars’ created by Thomas Hicks. It was created using digital stills and shows a love story between a couple that live in lighthouse. They both crashed on the same island at different times and built a lighthouse to prevent a giant tanker crashing on the rocks. Get a free Animal Kingdom track at www.weareanimalkingdom.com. Album ‘Signs and Wonders’ was out 21 September 2009, preceded by the single of the same name on 14 September.

3. Flogging Molly: Float

Karni & Saul have created a jarring, jangly, wind-swept crazy crescendo of a video for Celtic-punkers Flogging Molly’s “Float.” The blend of stop-motion, CGI, and live action is insane, and the lonely, vagabond feel of the visuals lurches perfectly with the folksong/bar brawl/fiddle/banjo/accordion/screaming combo of the song itself.

4. IOC: All Together Now

Nexus Productions’ directing duo Fx and Mat put their powers to use for the International Olympic Committee and agency Coler & Weber United in “All Together Now,” a beautifully rendered tale of titanic Olympians literally pulling the earth’s geography together into a neo-Pangea.

5. Audi Q5: Unboxed

Bartle Bogle Hegarty London published a new TV spot for Audi’s SUV, Q5.  Its not a typical stylish car advertisement like Audi’s old TV spots, this one is more imaginative, with mixed cell and 3d animation brilliantly interlinked to create a stunning new (catchy) ad.

6. Neotel: No Restrictions

The commercial titled No Restrictions was done by TBWA\ advertising agency for Neotel company in South Africa. It was released in the September 2008. Business sector is Commercial public services.

7. Comparethemarket.com: Jingle

An aristocratic furry creature in a velvet smoking jacket stands in front of the fire in a baronial hall and explains the difference between his 'Compare the Meerkat' website and a similar sounding one for cheap car insurance -comparethemarket.com He plays the advertising jingles for both on an old tape recorder, claiming that they are completely different, whereas in fact they are very similar, as are the logos of teh two sites that he points to.

8. Alko: Father & Son

An ad subtlety reflecting on how drinking alcohol and the behaviour that can result from it, might affect young children depicted using Hodgson’s classic sensitive and organic line drawing style.

Sponsored by Alko, the state owned organisation that manages the distribution and sale of alcohol in Finland, the intention of the films is to subtlely encourage people from all backgrounds to reflect on how drinking alcohol and the behaviour that can result from it, might affect young children. Sherbet won the project by proposing the use of sensitive and organic line drawing to create mother and daughter and father son characters that were non specific and that avoided tradtional cartoon character genres.

12. What Light (Through Yonder Window Breaks)

What Light is a time lapse/stop frame animation. A sunlight cast through a bedroom window takes on new shapes as it journeys around the room. The light in question breaks free, taking on a life of its own.

13. Txt Island

Tandem Films’ Chris Gavin created this stop-motion short using plastic peg-board letters. It is a tale of rampant commercialism animated with ASCII characters. "They came, they found paradise, they made it their own..." TXT ISLAND an animated typographic adventure by director Chris Gavin. The film uses plastic signboard letters to convey an epic story of man versus nature. This film was shot as stop-motion animation, then 'enhanced' with After Effects. An enormous cliff top, blue sky, multiple deaths and a man keeping a meticulous note of it all. This man lives a relatively peaceful and tidy existence, filling his time by watching others ending theirs as they jump from the top of the cliff. Soon, however, he finds circumstance plotting against him as he is drawn ever nearer to the edge of the cliff himself...

17. Train of Thought

In a world made entirely out of paper, the wistful drawings in a man′s sketchbook are brought to life by the rhythm of a train journey... Train of Thought was made as our graduation film from The Arts Institute at Bournemouth in 2008-2009. Although we used digital compositing software, all the animation and models were done by hand, not with CGI. The film took approximately 9 months to complete, from storyboards through to the final edit. It was a team effort, and we were especially lucky to work with talented modelmaking students, and a mix of professional and student actors. The music is by Portico Quartet, arranged by Jack Wyllie , and sound design by Andrew South.

20. Black Dog's Progress

A series of flipbooks tell the sad story of the Black Dog. The sad story of the Black Dog is told with a series of flipbooks. The scene grows denser as looped scenes accumulate and the narrative develops. The Black Dog, unwanted by his owner, is thrown out into an unwelcoming neighbourhood. On his journey he’s corrupted by acts of violence and grows determined to live happily ever after back home. Unfortunately Mother has different plans and his story ends in tragedy. The film is told within a single shot using a series of flipbook animations. The scene grows denser as looped scenes accumulate and the narrative develops.

British Animation Awards 2010 Winners
8 April 2010 saw the British Animation Awards ceremony take place at BFI Southbank. Notable mentions go to Stephen Irwin whose film The Black Dog’s Progress received two awards, including Best Short Film; Philip Hunt from Studio AKA was awarded Best Animated Special for his film, Lost & Found; The Secret of Kells, directed by Tomm Moore & Nora Twomey, took the European Animated Feature; and Aardman Animations walked away with the awards for the Children’s Choice and Best Children’s Series categories.
