Paralympics Dance Workshop-to preserve in heart

Written by Mr Liu Shengfeng (one of the participants)

Although my language may not be gorgeous, what I am writing all my true feelings from deep heart, which I want very much to share with you. I hope you will also love my story.

The Paralympics Dance Workshop ended in our vigorous laughing and talking. Though only short as 5 days, the true touch and deep shock it brought to us will always be the best memory of my life. Every movement in our training, no matter solo dance, dual dance or multi-persons-dance, was developed by us upon our own imagination and interest. They are the dances attached to our individuals. Our trainer would compose appropriate music according to our self-developed movements, so that we don’t need to worry about control of rhythm. We remain the centre place of this dance stage during the whole training, accompanied all along by the trainer's music. At that moment I understood that dances were born from our daily life. Our trainer encouraged us all along to think wider without hesitation, and to create any movement without limitation. When we were chatting during break time, everybody was sharing the same experience:" I in fact am able to dance on stage." This is a fact that we even dared not to think about before, and it did realize. Our self-confidence was enhanced. We felt life so good. From then on, it would always be self-confidence, harmonious, and pleasure that stay beside us.

A disabled classmate was arranged to work together with a normal one to develop a dual dance. Communication and comprehension between the disabled and the normal were better promoted in this process. We made all efforts to express through dance movements our love inside and our confidence and courage towards life. Before, due to some kind of physical disability, we tried to escape from reality and the outside world. Thus we almost forget that our heart also filled with love, confidence and courage towards life. It was the unconscious fear that stopped our potential from developing and displaying. While in fact, we have measureless potential and love, which supported us to input more for even better movement during the training. For us, the disabled, such a chance was rare and difficult to obtain, therefore we valued it very much.

The encouraging teaching mode by our trainer also inspirited every classmate. If a movement was not performed well, our trainer will say "One more time, and it will be better." Upon her encouragement we would try once more, and would receive the praise of our trainer and the applause of others. For us it was not a simple praise but a kind of firm recognition. Under our trainer's instruction and inspired by "one more time and it will be better", we tried very hard to finish every single movement. This was a key reason that all of us unified closely through the training.

Cooperation is required and plays vital function in the fours’ dance. The movements of all four dancers should be merged harmoniously to achieve graceful dance. And I finally understood that dance performance requires cooperation and comprehension of all participants, requires us to be hand in hand and side by side. The impact to us would contribute greatly in our future life, study and work.

The five days passed in pleasure and happiness. We enjoyed and forgot about tiredness. A smile or an encouragement would bring forward enormous courage and confidence to us. This innovative dance workshop also enhanced our communication between the disabled and the normal in joint work.

Thanks to BNT Ballet Group, the Cultural and Education Section of British Embassy, Chinese Disabled Persons Federation, China Lions Club, and everyone who provided care and support to this successful Paralympic Dance Workshop. Thank you for providing such an opportunity for us to exercise and display. I believe every member of this workshop will keep the beautiful memory deeply, and I do think this is the beginning of our brighter future.
