Celine Condorelli / Gavin Wade

“Support Structure is an evolving collaborative project between architect Celine Condorelli and artist-curator Gavin Wade. Our aim is to design and create a universally adaptable support structure that approaches the specific rather than the generic.” Support structure has been tested in 6 locations that range in scale and in publicity/ privacy. Sites have included the Chisenhale Gallery, the Economist Building, and Greenham Common.

MADE IN

Package for shopping mall-

The project turns the shopping mall from a place of consumption to a place of production. What type of cultural and experiential knowledge does a mall produce? MADE IN deals with shopping malls as contexts mixing high and low culture - away from the museum, the library or any dead repository for knowledge they are spaces of public appearance, choreographed, layed out and organised as complete environments with an almost total absence of an outside (spatially) but completely integrated within a global economy and cultural understanding.

As an art and architecture intervention MADE IN aims to work with existing materials integrated within the shopping mall's every day life, the components that make its environment work, as a system. Products that seemlessly appear as part of the unconscious of the place, adjusted, reinvented and translated. The elements designed and produced should be able to live as pieces in the context of the exhibition but also be fully integrated in the landscape of the mall without questions. Shopping bags, soundtrack, background, interface.

Interests and ideas:

Translation and production

Plastic bag production- in china exported towards the west and then recycled back in china

Recycling and translation of material, of culture

Muzak and translation of music into 'background music' as a cultural artifact.

The proposal is to produce an exhibition system in a bag-

1. Shopping bags will be produced in situ -in the mall-  with plastic fabric used for construction. The fabric is stamped with a carp (representation of value), and then sown into bags according to a basic pattern. These can be adjusted to suit individual needs by just talking to the person sowing.

2 Music for shopping mall

Commissioned soundtrack for the shopping malls and GIL exhibitions. The CD is available to buy in the shop and wil be playing for the duration of the exhibition. It features 3 sound Beijing artists: 718, Yan Jun and Zafka and original furniture music by Eric Satie and has been released on Kwanyin records especially for GIL 2007.
