Circus Stars

Reading Challenge for 7 to 15 year olds

The British Council Library and Information Centre is organising a Reading Challenge, the largest UK reading promotion for young learners, to encourage young learners to make their own book selection, to help them discover the pleasure and excitement of reading, to maximize their reading potential and to promote a sense of achievement among them.

What is Circus Stars?

• Circus Stars is a challenge to keep you busy reading books all your free time.
• You read at least 6 books in the library, and in return you will be presented Certificates and Medals at the award giving ceremony.
• Another challenge is to draw a picture of your favourite character from the books or to write a review of your favourite book, and win prizes.

What do you have to do to become a member of Circus Star?

If you are a library member aged between 7 and 15 years old, sign up now at the Library Counter.

How much time do you have?

You’ve got 6 weeks for reading and writing/drawing.

(date and time for the award giving ceremony will be announced later)

Limited places available. First Come First Served.

Information for participants

STAGE 1: READING

1. Register at the Library counter. You will be given a membership card, which you will have to bring when you visit the library to read books.
2. You will be also given a special fold out poster to keep track of the books you have read.
3. There are three steps to the challenge this year: read two books and you get a Popcorn sticker, read two more and you can claim a Bouquet of flowers sticker, and read two more (six in total) and you can get a Rabbit Poo sticker!
4. Record the book you have read in the special fold out poster by putting the stickers on it.

(Note: Circus Star books can be read in the Knowledge Garden. Certificates and Gold Medals will be awarded to those who finish reading six books)

STAGE 2: DRAWING PICTURE OR WRITING BOOK REVIEW

1. After reading six books you can start preparing for the second stage (the earlier you finish reading, the longer time you will have for drawing and writing review).
2. Choose and draw on any A4 paper the picture of your favourite character from the books you’ve read. AND/OR
3. Choose your favourite book and write a review on it, in 300 words (maximum).
