There is no data from official sociological studies with which we could measure how and to what extent social attitudes toward the sexually different in Bulgaria have changed – today in comparison to the early 1990’s, for example. And this is one of the problems – LGBT (an acronym for ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) are not part of the statistics.

But if we trust conversations with representatives of this group there is positive change. More and more people ‘come out’ i.e. they reveal their sexuality to friends, relatives, colleagues. ‘More and more’, however, does not mean ‘most’. In LGBT circles the opinion which still prevails is that ‘coming out’ would only bring you trouble – mocking, disgust, harassment, termination of employment contract.
