Pretesting
As part of Cambridge ESOL's commitment to accuracy and quality, they submit all the materials in their exams to a number of procedures to ensure they are accurate and reliable. One of these is pretesting.
Pretests give students a chance to practise taking a Cambridge ESOL exam using genuine questions under exam conditions.
After taking the Reading, Listening and Use of English papers, the pretesting students are given scores. Writing papers are marked by genuine Cambridge ESOL examiners and candidates receive information about how they performed in the writing test (note: Pretests are not available for Speaking papers.)
This helps students to know which areas they need most practice in, and gives them experience and confidence in taking tests. For teachers, it helps highlight areas where their students might need more help.
British Council Language AssistancePublications
A wide range of course books, practice tests and learning resources are produced by independent publishers in the UK and in the Benelux to help prepare candidates for Cambridge ESOL exams. Several hundred titles specifically linked to the exams are available. For more details, please contact the publisher directly. Contact details to major publishers are available on the Resources to prepare for your exam page.Equal Opportunity and Diversity
In April 2009, the British Council published a new handbook for teachers of English, developed by David Valente. This Equal Opportunity and Diversity Handbook has been produced for English teachers, by English teachers. Our goal is to provide sound practical advice on how to become more aware of equal opportunities and diversity and to ensure they are integrated in classrooms and staffrooms. The suggestions for activities, lesson materials and professional development tools should be seen as springboards which you can adapt to suit you own learners' and teaching purposes. We hope these 'lived' case studies will inspire you to be creative in your approach to integrating equal opportunity and diversity into your teaching.
